Character AI Ads and What Ad-Free Costs
Only c.ai+ removes Character AI ads, at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. What lite reduces, what Charms cost, and what the ad layer collects.

The only way to remove Character AI ads completely is c.ai+, at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. The cheaper tier, (c.ai) lite, reduces them rather than removing them: Character.AI describes it as "no banner ads, and fewer interstitial ads", and says plainly that "a fully ad-free experience is included with (c.ai+)". There is a third route almost nobody mentions, an in-app currency called Charms that can be spent to bypass ads, sold on the App Store in six pack sizes from $0.99 to $99.99.
We read the live character.ai/subscribe comparison grid, the "(c.ai) lite FAQ", the "C.ai+ FAQ", the Charms FAQ, the c.ai+ offer terms and the US App Store in-app purchase list on September 22, 2026, and the Character.AI Privacy Policy dated July 1, 2026. We sell a competing product and we run no ads at all, so weigh the conclusions accordingly. Every figure below points at a document you can open yourself.
How do you remove ads from Character AI?
You pay, and how much you pay decides whether the ads get quieter or disappear. The current comparison grid on Character.AI's own subscribe page has one row labeled Ads with three values across the three plans: Full on free, Less on lite, None on (c.ai+). That row is the whole answer, and it is the only row where the three tiers differ absolutely rather than by degree.
| Route | What happens to the ads | Price as listed | Where you can actually buy it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Full ads, banner and interstitial | $0 | It is the default |
| (c.ai) lite | "No banner ads, and fewer interstitial ads" | "Starts at $4.99/mo" in the help center. The App Store lists Character.AI Lite twice, at $4.99 and at $2.49, with no period attached | App Store and Google Play. The web subscribe page compares lite but shows no price and no button for it |
| c.ai+ monthly | None | $9.99 | Web (billed through Stripe), App Store, Google Play |
| c.ai+ annual | None | $94.99, shown struck through from $119.88 with a "save 21%" badge | Web and App Store |
| c.ai+ promotional offers | None | $14.99 for the first 3 months then $9.99 a month, or $59.99 for the first year then $94.99 | New and eligible returning subscribers only, applied automatically at checkout |
| Charms | "Bypass ads" is listed as one of three things Charms can be spent on during the beta | Packs at $0.99, $2.99, $4.99, $9.99, $24.99 and $99.99 | App Store in-app purchases, although the Charms FAQ still says buying them is a future feature |
| Depravity, for comparison | No ads on any plan, including the entry plan | $15 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly | One checkout on the web, works in any browser |
Most people arrive at this question from a phone, which matters, because the cheap tier is a phone product. Every billing answer in the lite FAQ routes you to a store: upgrading happens "through your app store's standard plan-change flow", and a c.ai+ subscriber asking to move down is told "you can manage your subscription anytime through your app store." If you are on a laptop looking at three columns and wondering why the middle one has no button, that is the reason.
Does c.ai lite remove ads or just reduce them?
Reduce. The wording is unusually precise for this category, and worth quoting exactly: "(c.ai) lite significantly reduces the ads you see compared to the free experience. A fully ad-free experience is included with (c.ai+)." Elsewhere the same article breaks it down further, promising "no banner ads, and fewer interstitial ads". Banners go. Interstitials, the full-screen ones that land between actions, get rarer.
That distinction is the difference between $59.88 and $119.88 over a year at the monthly rates, or $59.88 against $94.99 if you take the annual c.ai+ plan. The annual plan is where the arithmetic bites: $94.99 a year is about $7.92 a month, which is less than $9.99 and only three dollars above the listed lite price for a result that is absolute rather than partial. If ads are genuinely your reason for paying, the annual c.ai+ plan is the tier that actually solves it, and lite is the one that almost does.
What are Charms, and can you buy them to skip ads?
Charms are Character.AI's in-app currency. The Charms FAQ lists three things they can be spent on during the beta: imagining additional chat images or chats, skipping slow mode, and bypassing ads. It also says how you get them, and this is where the vendor's two surfaces disagree. The help center: "Right now, you can earn Charms through activities in the app. In the future, you'll also be able to purchase Charms and use them on a wider set of features."
The US App Store listing for the Character.AI app sells six Charms packs today, at $0.99, $2.99, $4.99, $9.99, $24.99 and $99.99. That top pack is the largest single item on the entire listing, bigger than a year of c.ai+. Both statements were readable on September 22, 2026: the FAQ calling purchase a future feature, and the store taking the money.
Two more lines from the same FAQ belong in any spending decision. Charms "are tied to your account, cannot be transferred to other users, and are not redeemable for real-world money." And Character.AI "may also in its sole discretion and at any time discontinue providing Charms, or any part thereof, with or without notice." Buying a $99.99 pack of a currency whose sole use for this purpose is muting an advertisement, which the seller can retire without telling you, is a different transaction from buying a $94.99 subscription, even though the two numbers look almost identical.
What does an ad-supported chat app do with your conversations?
Character.AI's Privacy Policy, effective July 1, 2026 and published by Character Technologies, Inc., is direct about the tracking layer: "We and our third-party providers, which include advertising and analytics providers and other service providers, use cookies, web beacons, and other tracking technologies to collect information about your use of the Services." It also notes that the specific technologies and providers "may vary depending on where you are located and whether you access the Services via our websites or mobile applications."
The rights section lists, among others, the right "to opt out of sales of personal information or targeted advertising", which tells you the category of processing the company considers itself to be in. A separate help center article, summarizing a policy update with the same July 1 effective date, adds that users can opt out of personal data being used to train and improve the models, and that the models were trained "primarily on publicly available data, including large-scale third-party datasets and open-source collections."
None of that is unusual for an advertising-funded consumer product, and Character.AI documents it more clearly than most of its competitors do. It is simply a different bargain from the one people think they are in when they type something private into a chat window. If that is the part that bothers you rather than the banner itself, paying to hide the banner does not address it. Our own position, for the record, is on our privacy page: chats are never sold, never shared, and never used to train advertising, on any plan.
Is paying to remove Character AI ads worth it?
If ads are your only complaint, yes, and the annual plan is the honest recommendation: $94.99 a year removes them outright, and it also lifts slow mode, raises memory pins from 15 to 30, and unlocks the premium chat styles that free users cannot touch and lite users get a daily taste of. That is four fixes for one price, and unlimited messaging stays on every tier including free, which is a genuinely generous thing Character.AI does and keeps doing.
If ads are the visible symptom of a broader frustration, read one more sentence before you pay. It is from Character.AI's own c.ai+ FAQ: "The quality of responses has not changed for anyone. The content outputted by Characters is currently the same between c.ai and c.ai+." A subscription buys a quieter, faster version of exactly the same content policy. People who pay because they assumed the paid tier writes differently are buying silence, not range.
There is also a renewal detail worth knowing before you click. The current offer terms state that the promotional prices step up automatically, and that "you will not receive a separate notice prior to auto-renewal beyond what is disclosed at the time of purchase." A $14.99 three-month trial becomes $9.99 a month, and a $59.99 first year becomes $94.99, with the only warning being the checkout screen you already closed. If you sign up for several of these across a year, a habit of being able to see a renewal coming before the card is charged saves more than the discount did. The same terms add that "no partial refunds are issued for unused time within a billing period", so cancelling mid-term stops the next charge rather than refunding the current one.
What if the ads were the last straw?
Then the question is not which tier mutes them, it is whether the product underneath is still the one you want. Ads arriving in a chat app usually signal a shift in who the product is built to serve, and in this case they arrived alongside a second shift: open-ended chat is being withdrawn for under-18 users, and an age assurance system now runs on every account. Character.AI confirms that paying does not exempt you from it, stating that "purchasing a Character.AI+ subscription does not bypass or override the age assurance process."
If you are an adult and what you actually wanted was a chat that does not hedge, an ad-free tier of a filtered product is the wrong purchase. Depravity is adults only at 18 and over, has no ads on any plan, no in-app currency, and no cheaper tier that rations the good model by the day. Plans start at $15 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly, and you cancel from inside your own account rather than through an emailed billing portal. The full breakdown of what a Character.AI subscription costs and what it does not change is on our Character AI subscription page, the tier-by-tier pricing detail sits in our Character AI Plus pricing breakdown, and the side-by-side comparison is on the Character AI alternative page.
