Character AI subscription and Character AI Plus pricing with c.ai lite and what paying does not change
A Character AI subscription is sold under three names, on three different counters, and the help center that is supposed to explain it is a decade out of step with the product. c.ai+ is the flagship at $9.99 a month. Below it sits a cheaper plan written as (c.ai) lite, which the website compares against but will not sell you. Above both sits a virtual currency called Charms, which Character.AI's own FAQ says you cannot buy yet and which the App Store has been selling in six pack sizes.

Short answer
A Character AI subscription costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year for c.ai+, read from the live character.ai/subscribe page and the US App Store in-app purchase list on September 22, 2026. The cheaper tier, (c.ai) lite, is listed at "starts at $4.99/mo" in the help center and appears twice on the App Store list, at $4.99 and at $2.49, with no price and no purchase button anywhere on the web. What the money buys is speed, memory, fewer ads and priority, not a different content policy: Character.AI states in its own c.ai+ FAQ that "the quality of responses has not changed for anyone. The content outputted by Characters is currently the same between c.ai and c.ai+."
We read the Character.AI help center, the live subscribe page, the flash sale offer terms and the US App Store in-app purchase list on September 22, 2026, and put every figure in one table below. The part worth reading twice is not a price. It is a sentence Character.AI publishes in its own c.ai+ FAQ: the content the Characters produce is the same whether you pay or not.
What makes it feel honest
Character AI subscription, the way it should feel
One price list, printed in public
Open is $15 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly. Unfiltered is $29, or $24 yearly. Boundless is $59, or $49 yearly. The numbers sit on our pricing page in dollars, not behind a store listing or a login.
Paying changes the product
There is one Depravity experience and it is the unfiltered one. You are not buying a faster queue for the same refusals, and there is no cheaper tier that gives you a daily taste of the model you actually wanted.
No currency on top of the plan
Your plan is the bill. We do not sell packs of a token you spend to skip a queue, unlock an image, or bypass an ad, and we do not run ads in the first place.
Cancel from your own account
Cancellation is a button inside your account, not an emailed magic link to a third-party billing portal or a trip to the App Store settings screen.

Prices were read on September 22, 2026 from the live character.ai/subscribe page, the US App Store listing for "Character AI: Chat, Talk, Text" (seller Character Technologies, Inc., version 1.17.3, released September 8, 2026), the "(c.ai) lite FAQ" and "C.ai+ FAQ" help center articles, and the "c.ai+ Summer Flash Sale, Offer Terms" article, which was still live and still called a summer sale on September 22. Four things Character.AI does well, stated plainly: unlimited messaging genuinely stays on the free plan, the promotional step-up price is disclosed in writing rather than buried, the age assurance FAQ answers the awkward subscription question directly instead of dodging it, and its character library of user-made characters is far larger than anything a single product can offer.
How much does a Character AI subscription cost?
c.ai+ is $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. The annual price appears on the live subscribe page struck through from $119.88 with a badge reading "save 21%", and the same two figures appear as in-app purchase items on the App Store listing, so unusually for this category you pay the same whether you buy on the web or inside the app. Most adult chat apps add two to five dollars for store billing. Character.AI does not.
Underneath that sits (c.ai) lite. The help center answers the price question with "(c.ai) lite starts at $4.99/mo. Pricing varies by region so (c.ai) lite stays affordable in local markets." The App Store tells a slightly different story: it lists Character.AI Lite twice, once at $4.99 and once at $2.49, with no billing period attached to either item. We are not going to guess which is the monthly rate and which is a weekly, regional or promotional item, because Character.AI has not published that anywhere. Check the figure on your own checkout screen.
There are also two promotional entry prices, and they are the ones that catch people. The flash sale terms offer $14.99 up front for the first three months, then $9.99 a month, or $59.99 for a first year that renews at $94.99. Character.AI is direct about what happens next: "You will not receive a separate notice prior to auto-renewal beyond what is disclosed at the time of purchase." The disclosure happens once, at the checkout screen, and the charge changes on its own afterwards.
A longer walkthrough of the promotional pricing, the ad-supported free tier and what Lite costs over a year sits in our Character AI Plus pricing breakdown.
What does Character AI Plus actually give you?
The older c.ai+ FAQ, still published, describes a different product entirely: skipping waiting rooms, "lightning fast message generation", an exclusive community channel and a membership badge, with responses "generated approx. 2-3x faster". None of that is in the current grid. Character.AI is running two descriptions of the same subscription in the same help center, one written for a 2023 capacity crisis and one written for a 2026 ads business, and neither points at the other.
The current feature grid on character.ai/subscribe compares Free, lite and (c.ai+) across five groups: ads, chat styles, memory, daily limits and experience. Reading it row by row is the fastest way to see what the money is for, because the differences are all about throughput rather than capability.
- Ads: full on free, fewer on lite, none on c.ai+.
- Premium chat styles (DeepSqueak and LongSqueak): locked on free, a "daily taste" on lite, unlimited on c.ai+. The basic styles, PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr, are on every plan including free.
- Memory: 15 pins on free, 30 on lite and on c.ai+. The pin count is identical on the two paid tiers; what c.ai+ adds is an advanced Lorebook against the basic one.
- Slow mode: yes on free, less on lite, none on c.ai+.
- Feature limits: the live subscribe page marks c.ai+ as "Highest". The copy of the same table inside the help center marks it "Unlimited". The two surfaces do not agree, so read the one in front of you.
Does Character AI Plus remove the filter?
No, and you do not have to take our word for it. The c.ai+ FAQ asks itself the question and answers it: "Is the quality of Character responses changing for users who don't have a c.ai+ subscription? No. The quality of responses has not changed for anyone. The content outputted by Characters is currently the same between c.ai and c.ai+."
That sentence is the single most useful thing on the whole help center, and almost none of the pricing roundups quote it. A subscription buys you a faster, quieter, ad-free version of exactly the same content policy. If you are paying $9.99 a month because a video suggested the filter loosens up on the paid tier, you are buying priority in a queue.
The same is true of the age gate. The Age Assurance FAQ states that "purchasing a Character.AI+ subscription does not bypass or override the age assurance process. All users, regardless of subscription status, are required to complete age assurance. If you have subscribed to CAI+ and have not yet completed age verification, you will still need to do so to access the full platform experience." Paying does not move you to the front of that queue either.
For what the filter does and does not catch, and whether it has loosened at all this year, see does Character AI still have a filter. For how the selfie check works and what Persona keeps, see our page on Character AI age verification.
What is (c.ai) lite and why can you not buy it on the website?
(c.ai) lite is a middle tier that gives you a daily allowance of premium chat style messages, fewer ads, 30 memory pins instead of 15, and chat customization such as wallpapers and bubble colors. When the daily allowance runs out, the help center says, "your chat continues on the standard styles, nothing is interrupted, and your premium messages reset each day."
Where you buy it is the odd part. The subscribe page at character.ai puts lite in the middle column of its comparison grid, with a full row-by-row feature list, and then offers no price for it and no button. The only purchase control on that page is for c.ai+. Meanwhile the help center answers every lite billing question by pointing at a phone: upgrading happens "through your app store's standard plan-change flow", and a c.ai+ subscriber asking to move down to lite is told "you can manage your subscription anytime through your app store." On the App Store list, Character.AI Lite is there twice.
The practical version: lite looks like a mobile-only product being advertised on a web page that cannot sell it. If you are a desktop user comparing the three columns and wondering why the middle one has no button, that is why.
What are Charms in Character AI, and can you buy them?
Charms are an in-app virtual currency. The Charms FAQ says they can be spent, during a beta, on three things: imagining additional chat images or chats, skipping slow mode, and bypassing ads. It also says how you get them: "Right now, you can earn Charms through activities in the app. In the future, you'll also be able to purchase Charms and use them on a wider set of features."
The US App Store listing for the Character.AI app sells six Charms packs today: Starter at $0.99, Small at $2.99, Medium at $4.99, Large at $9.99, Extra Large at $24.99, and an Extra Extra Extra Large pack at $99.99. That is the largest single item on the entire listing, larger than a year of c.ai+. The help center says purchasing is a future feature. The store has been taking the money. Both were readable on September 22, 2026.
Two other lines are worth knowing before you spend. Charms "are tied to your account, cannot be transferred to other users, and are not redeemable for real-world money." And Character.AI reserves the right to "in its sole discretion and at any time discontinue providing Charms, or any part thereof, with or without notice." A $99.99 pack of something the vendor can retire without notice is a different purchase from a $94.99 annual subscription, even though the numbers look alike.
Is Character AI Plus worth it?
It depends entirely on which problem you are trying to solve, and the honest split is clean. If your problem is that the app is slow, ad-heavy, forgetful or queued, c.ai+ fixes all four for $7.92 a month on the annual plan, and the enormous library of community-made characters is genuinely something no single product can replicate. That is a fair deal and we will say so.
If your problem is that the model refuses, softens or lectures, c.ai+ fixes none of it, by Character.AI's own published answer. You will pay $119.88 a year to receive the identical content faster. That is the group we built Depravity for, and the reason the tool sits at the top of this page rather than behind a signup wall: try a conversation that would normally trip a refusal and see what comes back before you decide anything.
There is a third group worth naming: people who already pay and are about to be moved. Character.AI announced that open-ended chat is ending for under-18 users, with a rollout that began limiting teen chat time to two hours a day and ramping down from there, and that similar changes will follow in other countries. Its note to that community says "for c.ai+ users under 18, while your user experience may be changing, there are still many features that you can take advantage of", followed by a link to manage the subscription. That is a paid plan whose headline feature is being withdrawn for a whole age bracket.
If you are weighing a move rather than a renewal, our Character AI alternative page compares the two products feature by feature, and is Character AI getting shut down covers what is actually happening to the platform.
How do I cancel my Character AI subscription or get a refund?
It depends which rail billed you, and the web path is more involved than most. For a web subscription, the help center says to go to Settings, then Account, then Manage, enter the email on your account, wait for a secure link to arrive by email, check the spam folder, and click through to a Stripe customer portal to make the change. Character.AI notes that if the link does not arrive within five minutes you should re-check the address and confirm the subscription was actually bought on the web.
For app subscriptions, cancellation happens in the Apple or Google subscriptions screen, and refunds go through Apple or Google under their own policies. For web purchases, the lite FAQ tells you to open a support ticket and choose the "Payments and purchases" option, adding "we always honor the price shown to you at checkout."
One rule applies to everybody, and it is in the offer terms: "Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. No partial refunds are issued for unused time within a billing period." Cancelling on day two of an annual term stops the renewal, not the year. Accepted payment methods, per the c.ai+ FAQ, are credit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay.
What is missing from the Character AI subscription FAQ?
Character.AI's c.ai+ FAQ opens with a promise: "These FAQs cover c.ai+: what it includes, how your daily premium works, pricing, and managing your subscription or refunds." Read the rest of it and there is no price anywhere, no refund answer, and no mention of a daily premium allowance, because the daily allowance belongs to lite. The article is a 2023 document with a 2026 introduction pasted on top.
The cheaper plan is better documented than the flagship. The (c.ai) lite FAQ has an actual price, an actual refund paragraph, an actual cancellation path and an explanation of what happens when the allowance runs out. The $9.99 tier's own page has none of those. If you are trying to work out what you are buying, read the lite article even when you are buying c.ai+.
The last gap is the one that matters most to this site's readers, and Character.AI fills it honestly rather than leaving it open: the subscription does not change the content policy and does not skip age assurance. Both of those are published in plain language. They are simply published somewhere almost nobody looks.
If you would rather not have to read four help center articles to find out what you are paying for, our pricing page puts all three plans and every included feature on one screen, and is Character AI safe for adults covers the policy side.
