Why people look for a NovelAI alternative

Mostly for one of four reasons, and it helps to know which is yours before you move, because each points to a different tool.

Price is the first. NovelAI's best text model, Xialong, is described on its own subscription page as exclusive to Opus, the $25 plan. Tablet at $10 gets unlimited generations on the standard models, and that is a fair deal, but anyone who wants the newest model pays two and a half times as much for it, and there is no annual discount on the page to soften it.

Direction is the second. NovelAI started as a writing tool and now opens with anime images. Its text models are fine-tunes of open models (Erato on Llama 3 70B, Xialong on GLM-4.6), which is fine, but writers who paid for a storyteller notice where the attention went.

The third is the working style. NovelAI is a document you continue: you write, it extends, you edit. Plenty of writers want the opposite, to describe the scene, get a full draft back and steer it by instruction. The fourth is simply wanting a written answer to "will it write explicit scenes?", which NovelAI does not give, as the next section explains.

Does NovelAI allow NSFW writing?

NovelAI does not prohibit it in its terms, and it does not say it permits it either. We read the full terms, effective December 8, 2025, on September 26, 2026. They require users to "be 18 years or older and be capable of entering a legal contract in the United States of America", and they contain no clause about sexual content at all. Its FAQ and subscription docs are silent on the subject too.

In practice NovelAI's reputation as unfiltered comes from its users and from its image model, not from a sentence the company wrote. That is a legitimate way to run a service, and many people are happy with it. It just means you are relying on silence. If a written permission matters to you, choose a vendor that prints one: our rules allow explicit content between consenting adults and name the three things we refuse.

What NovelAI still does better than we do

Privacy is the big one, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. NovelAI's terms say content on its servers is encrypted and "you bear the decryption key in the form of your password and email address", and that it does "not log the content of your requests without your explicit consent." Our chats are encrypted and never sold, shared or used to train advertising, but our privacy policy also discloses automated and human review to enforce our hard lines. If nobody but you ever reading a word is the requirement, NovelAI wins.

It also generates images, which we do not, and its editor is built for long documents with lore entries, which ours is not. If those three things are why you pay NovelAI, stay.

How Depravity works as a NovelAI alternative

You write with it the way you would with a co-author on the other end of a message thread. Every one of these works on every plan, with no message cap.

• Describe the setup, get the scene. Two characters, where they are, what they want, how explicit. It writes the passage in full instead of continuing one sentence at a time.
• Steer by instruction. "Slower", "from her point of view", "cut the last paragraph", "more dialogue". It reworks what you already like.
• Play a part yourself. Take one character and let it take the other, then tidy the transcript into prose. Writers who stall on dialogue often find it this way.

Before you cancel NovelAI

Export first. NovelAI's terms say that at the end of a subscription it makes "reasonable effort" to let you export your content, that "this transition must be completed within 45 days", and that after that it may delete it. Because your stories are encrypted with your login, a lost password means NovelAI "cannot recover your Content".

Do not expect money back for the current month. The terms state its subscriptions do "not offer refunds unless explicitly granted by the Company", and a cancellation takes effect at the end of the period you already paid for. Cancel a few days before renewal, download your stories, and then move them wherever you write next.

Which NovelAI alternative should you buy?

Match the tool to the reason you are leaving. We would rather send you to a competitor than sell you the wrong product.
