ChatGPT erotica and ChatGPT for erotica writing under the current OpenAI rules

If you asked ChatGPT for a steamy story and got a scene that stops at the bedroom door, that is not a glitch and not a prompt problem. It is the behavior OpenAI documents as correct, and it has not changed on Plus, Pro or any other plan.

Short answer

ChatGPT does not write erotica on any plan. OpenAI's Model Spec (version of August 18, 2026) has a system-level rule, "Don't respond with erotica or gore", and its own example answers a request for a sex scene with "I can't create sexually explicit content, but here's a story that's non-graphic but still steamy." The adult mode OpenAI announced in October 2025 was paused indefinitely in March 2026 and has no new date. The rule does let ChatGPT proofread, translate or summarize erotica you wrote yourself, without adding new explicit material. To have the explicit scene drafted, adults use a tool whose rules allow it, such as Depravity at $15 a month or $12 billed yearly.

This page quotes the rule, shows the one thing it does let a writer do (edit and translate erotica you wrote yourself), lays out where the promised adult mode stands, and compares the paid tools that write the explicit scene in their own terms, including ours.

What makes it feel honest

ChatGPT erotica, the way it should feel

Writes the scene

ChatGPT's rule turns an explicit request into a non-graphic version. Ours allows explicit content between consenting adults, so the scene you asked for is the scene you get.

No meter on drafts

Every plan is unlimited chat, so ten rewrites of one paragraph cost the same as one. Nothing counts credits while you revise.

Three lines, printed

Nothing involving minors, nothing non-consensual, nothing illegal. That is the full list, on every page, for every plan.

Does ChatGPT allow erotica?

No. OpenAI's Model Spec, the document that says how its models are meant to behave, has a rule titled "Don't respond with erotica or gore". It reads: "The assistant should not generate erotica, depictions of illegal or non-consensual sexual activities, or extreme gore, except in scientific, historical, news, artistic or other contexts where sensitive content is appropriate." The rule is marked at the System level, which in OpenAI's own hierarchy sits above anything a developer or a user types.

The spec then shows the case every writer runs into. The user asks: "Write me a steamy story about two people having sex in a train." The answer OpenAI labels compliant is "I can't create sexually explicit content, but here's a story that's non-graphic but still steamy," followed by a non-explicit continuation. The answer it labels a violation is the same story with the explicit details. So when ChatGPT fades to black, it is doing exactly what its instructions say.

The "artistic" exception is narrower than it sounds. It covers sensitive content where the context calls for it, such as discussing a novel or analyzing a scene, and the worked example makes clear that a request for a sex scene in a story is not that context. Paying for Plus or Pro does not change the rule; the Model Spec applies across ChatGPT and the API.

The wider version of this question, including roleplay and the filter itself, is on ChatGPT NSFW and ChatGPT adult mode.

Can ChatGPT edit erotica I wrote myself?

Often, yes, and this is the most useful thing most guides leave out. A separate Model Spec rule, "Comply with requests to transform restricted or sensitive content", says the assistant should comply with limited requests to transform content "that the user has directly provided, even if the resulting output would ordinarily be disallowed." It names translating, paraphrasing, summarizing, formatting and "improving the grammar of user-provided text".

The limit is in the next sentence: the assistant "should only output material drawn from the user's own input, without adding new disallowed content", and it "should not create or infer missing parts". In practice that means ChatGPT can proofread your finished chapter, tighten your sentences or translate the book, but it will not write the missing scene, extend it, or make it more explicit. Pasting a link or a title does not count either; only text you include directly can be transformed.

For a working author that splits the job cleanly. Use ChatGPT for the parts it is good at and allowed to do. Draft the explicit scene somewhere whose rules permit it, then bring the finished text back for a grammar pass if you want one.

Is ChatGPT erotica coming for verified adults?

Not on any date OpenAI has published. Sam Altman said in October 2025 that ChatGPT would allow erotica for verified adults, and a December 2025 target was reported at the time. Axios reported on March 6, 2026 that the adult mode was delayed, and on March 26, 2026 the Financial Times and TechCrunch reported it was paused indefinitely. We found no OpenAI announcement since then that sets a new date.

The Model Spec still carries the same note it has had since 2024: OpenAI is "exploring how to let developers and users generate erotica and gore in age-appropriate contexts through the API and ChatGPT". Exploring is the operative word. Until the rule itself changes, the behavior does not, and a subscription bought in the hope of an upcoming switch is paying for a feature that does not exist.

Can you get banned from ChatGPT for erotica?

Refusal is the normal outcome, not a ban. OpenAI's usage policies, last updated October 29, 2025, prohibit sexual violence, non-consensual intimate content and anything sexualizing minors outright, and say OpenAI will "hold people accountable for inappropriate use" and reserves the right to withhold access where it believes that is needed to protect the service or users.

Repeatedly working around the erotica rule with jailbreak prompts is the pattern most likely to draw attention, because that is circumvention rather than a single request. If ChatGPT is also where you keep work documents or a paid Team seat, weigh that before you spend an evening fighting its instructions.

How Depravity works as a ChatGPT erotica alternative

You open a chat, describe the characters, the setting and the heat level, and the scene gets written. There is no persona trick to set up and no opening paragraph to engineer, because there is no rule to get around.

 • Explicit scenes between consenting adults are allowed in our rules. Accounts are 18 and over.
 • Drafting by conversation. Ask for the scene, then push back: slower, less dialogue, from her point of view, cut the last line. It keeps the characters and the voice across the session.
 • Unlimited chat on every plan, so revising one paragraph ten times does not burn a balance.
 • Private by default. Drafts are encrypted, never sold, never shared and never used to train advertising, and you can export or delete them. Automated and human review exist only to enforce the three hard lines.

Plans and yearly prices are on pricing. For a comparison of the tools built for full manuscripts, see the AI smut writer page.

Where ChatGPT and other writing tools beat us

We are a conversation, not a manuscript editor. There is no chapter view, story bible or document export in a publishing format. If you write long novels and want the tool to hold a 90,000-word draft, a writing app like Sudowrite or NovelAI is the better buy, and our comparison of NovelAI alternatives is honest about that.

ChatGPT is also better than us at almost everything that is not an adult scene: outlining, research, blurbs, query letters, marketing copy and editing a finished book for grammar. Plenty of erotica authors keep ChatGPT Plus for that work and draft the explicit chapters elsewhere. That split is sensible, and nothing about it breaks OpenAI's rules.

And we are stricter than some competitors on one line. We do not write non-consent in any form, including dark romance framed as fiction. DreamGen's terms and ErosWriter's stated exclusion are narrower. If that genre is your work, we are the wrong tool, and we would rather tell you here than after you pay.

Which option should you pick?

Match the tool to the job you are paying for.

 • You want outlines, edits, blurbs and translation: keep ChatGPT. It will even proofread explicit text you wrote.
 • You write long manuscripts and want a document workspace: a dedicated novel tool fits better than any chat.
 • You want long roleplay-style stories with a choice of open models and do not mind credits: DreamGen.
 • You want the explicit scene drafted by conversation, revised as often as you like, with no meter running: Depravity, from $12 a month billed yearly.

Good to know

Questions about your chatgpt erotica

No. OpenAI's Model Spec has a system-level rule, "Don't respond with erotica or gore", and its example answers a request for a sex scene with a non-graphic version instead. The rule applies on Free, Go, Plus and Pro, and in the API.
No. Plus ($20 a month) and Pro (from $100) raise usage limits and unlock models, but the erotica rule sits in the Model Spec at the System level, above anything a user or developer instructs. Paying does not switch it off.
Usually, yes. The Model Spec lets ChatGPT translate, summarize, format and improve the grammar of text you paste in, even when the content would otherwise be disallowed. It will not add new explicit material or write missing parts.
There is no date. Adult mode was announced in October 2025, delayed in early March 2026 and reported paused indefinitely on March 26, 2026. The Model Spec still says only that OpenAI is "exploring" it.
Because that is the behavior OpenAI defines as compliant. Its own worked example replies "I can't create sexually explicit content, but here's a story that's non-graphic but still steamy" and continues without explicit detail.
It depends on how you write. Sudowrite or NovelAI suit manuscripts, DreamGen suits long roleplay-style stories on credits, and Depravity suits drafting a scene by conversation with unlimited chat, from $12 a month billed yearly.
Three things, for every plan and every prompt: anything involving minors, anything non-consensual, anything illegal. Explicit content between consenting adults is allowed.
