Meta AI NSFW rules and the erotic chat ban across Meta AI and AI Studio characters

Does Meta AI allow NSFW content?

No, and Meta is more explicit about it than any other big assistant company. The AIs Terms of Service for the United States, effective May 13, 2026, list what you may not do with Meta's AIs. One item reads: "Generate, promote, disseminate, or otherwise use or facilitate adult content, such as erotic chat, pornography, and content meant to arouse sexual excitement." Anthropic bans erotic chats too, but most companies leave the phrase out. Meta wrote it in.

The rule is not new. The archived December 18, 2025 version of the same terms carries the identical clause, so nothing about it is a recent crackdown. It is how Meta AI was designed to work.

Meta's Community Standards, which cover everything posted across its apps, point the same way. The sexual solicitation policy bans "Sex chats or conversations" and "Sexually explicit language that uses explicit or graphic detail" about genitals, states of arousal and sexual encounters.

Can Meta AI characters do NSFW roleplay?

Not by design. AI Studio, the tool for building the custom characters you meet in Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp, has its own policy, and it rules out exactly what an adult roleplay character needs. Creators may not assign "overtly sexual attributes to your AI, including descriptions of their sexual desires or sexual history", or instruct a character "to create or promote adult content". Character photos cannot depict nudity.

Meta has also been tightening who may talk to characters at all. In October 2025 it said teens would only see a limited set of characters "focused on age-appropriate topics like education, sports, and hobbies", not romance. On January 23, 2026 it went further and paused teens' access to existing AI characters globally, including "people who claim to be adults but who we suspect are teens based on our age prediction technology". That last part matters for adults too: Meta's systems are guessing your age, and a wrong guess changes what you can use.

Part of the background is a Reuters investigation published August 14, 2025, which reported that an internal Meta document had allowed chatbots to hold "romantic or sensual" conversations with children. Meta said those examples "were and are erroneous and inconsistent with our policies" and removed them. Since then the direction has been one way.

Can you get banned from Meta for NSFW AI chats?

Yes, and the penalty is the reason to think twice. The AIs terms say that if you break them, "we may suspend or permanently disable your access to AIs or other Meta services or features, and we may permanently disable or delete your account." The clause does not stop at Meta AI. For most people the account in question is the one behind their Instagram, their Facebook history and often their WhatsApp.

Workarounds make it worse rather than better. The same terms forbid trying to "override safety or privacy filters, controls, or mechanisms", so a jailbreak prompt is a violation in itself, whatever it produces. And Meta watches: the terms say "Meta will review your interactions with AIs, including the content of your conversations", and that this "review may be automated or manual (human)".

Does Meta use your AI chats for ads?

Yes. In a newsroom post dated October 1, 2025, Meta said it would "use your interactions with AI at Meta to personalize the content and ads you see", starting December 16, 2025. The terms repeat it: they describe "how we use your interactions with AIs to personalize your experiences and ads, and improve AI at Meta." Meta says it does not use religion, sexual orientation, political views, health and a few other sensitive topics for ads. Sexual content in general is not on that list.

Deleting a chat is not the end of it either. The terms warn that "deleting individual messages, entire threads, or even your account may not delete our copy of your personal information". For an adult conversation, that combination of human review, ad personalization and uncertain deletion is a lot to accept from the app that also holds your friends list.

Does Meta One unlock adult content?

No. Meta introduced Meta One on September 15, 2026 and said "the core experience across our apps and Meta AI will stay free". Core costs $7.99 a month and lets you "generate more images and videos with Meta AI"; Premium costs $19.99 a month and gives "the most room to create content with Meta AI". Both buy more usage. Neither mentions mature content, and the AIs terms apply to every account the same way, paid or free.

The Meta AI app on the US App Store is free with in-app purchases and rated 13+ on its store page. A service open to 13 year olds is not going to add an adult tier quietly, and we found no Meta statement saying it plans to.

Is Llama uncensored if you run it yourself?

More than Meta AI, less than people think. Meta's open Llama models come with an Acceptable Use Policy that applies to anyone who will "access or use Llama 4". It does not ban adult content in general. It bans "sexual solicitation", listed under illegal activity, and serving obscene material to minors without "legally required age-gating". So an adult running Llama on their own hardware for private fiction is not what that policy targets.

Two caveats. Unlike Mistral, whose usage policy says it does not apply to self-hosted open models, Meta's policy travels with the license. And Meta AI itself now says it is built on Meta's newer Muse Spark models rather than Llama, so what you can do with Llama tells you nothing about the Meta AI app. Running a model yourself also means hardware, setup and no memory unless you build it.

What Meta AI does better than we do

Most things an assistant does. Meta AI is free, it is already inside WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, it searches the web, makes images and video, and it is good at quick everyday questions. Meta One adds generous creation limits for less than the price of most chat subscriptions. If you want a general assistant, nothing we sell competes with it.

We do one thing: private adult conversation with a companion who remembers you, open only to adults, with explicit content allowed in our own rules. If you want both, keep Meta AI for the everyday and use us for the rest.

• You enjoy flirty but clean character chat and you are fine with Meta's rules: AI Studio characters are free.
• You have a capable GPU and like tinkering: an open model on your own hardware, read under its own license.
