Why are people looking for a Character AI alternative?

Mostly for one reason: the filter keeps breaking the conversation. The most common complaint is a reply that cuts off or deflects mid-scene, which pulls you straight out of whatever you were doing. The second most common is inconsistency, where a message that passed yesterday gets blocked today, or passes for a friend and not for you.

The platform has also moved steadily in the stricter direction. Character AI announced in October 2025 that it would remove open-ended chat for under-18 users, and it did so on November 24 and 25, 2025, replacing it with Feed, Imagine, Avatar FX, and Streams. Around the same period it rolled out age assurance, using an in-house classifier plus a third-party verification vendor. Whatever you think of those decisions, the direction of travel is clear, and a lot of adult users read it as a signal that open-ended adult conversation is not the product they are building anymore.

Is there a Character AI for adults?

Not on Character AI itself. There is no adult mode, no 18+ tier, and no setting that unlocks explicit content, and verifying your age does not change that. The community guidelines prohibit sexually explicit content across the entire platform, so the restriction applies to every account regardless of age. Any guide promising an adult unlock is describing something that does not exist.

This confuses people because Character AI is an 18+ product in one sense and a filtered one in another. The platform removed open-ended chat for under-18 users on November 24 and 25, 2025, which pushed it toward being adults-only, but it did not loosen what those remaining adults are allowed to talk about. Being verified as an adult gets you access to the same filter everyone else has.

So the phrase "Character AI for adults" describes a category rather than a feature you can turn on: products designed from the start for adult conversation instead of general-audience products with a gate bolted on. Does Character AI still have a filter?

Yes. Character AI has a content filter and it applies to everyone, including verified adults. Its community guidelines prohibit pornographic and sexually explicit content across the entire platform. There is no adult tier that switches it off, despite a lot of blog posts claiming otherwise.

Character AI has never published how the filter actually works, so anything you read about its mechanics is user observation rather than documentation. The most consistent report is that it behaves as though it is judging intent, blocking a reply based on where a conversation looks like it is heading rather than on the specific words in it. That is also why it over-blocks: fiction with dark themes, violence, and even medical or therapeutic topics get caught in it.

Is there an app like Character AI without a filter?

There are a few, and they are not all the same thing. Purpose-built uncensored chat products like Depravity give you an unfiltered conversation with a polished companion and a subscription. Bring-your-own-key roleplay front-ends like Janitor AI are largely free but expect you to supply model access yourself. Running an open-weights model on your own hardware is genuinely unfiltered and completely private, but it is a project, not an app.

The trade is convenience against control. Depravity sits at the convenient end: nothing to configure, companions that stay in voice, and a conversation that does not get yanked away from you. If you would rather assemble it yourself and you have the hardware, a self-hosted model is a perfectly good answer and we are not going to talk you out of it.

What should you look for in a Character AI alternative?

Five things separate a real alternative from a reskin. Most people only find out about the last two after they have already gotten attached to a conversation.

• Does the filter actually stay out of the way, or does it just trigger slightly later than Character AI does?
• Does the memory hold. A companion that forgets the thread every session is a worse experience than a filtered one that remembers.
• What happens to your chat data, and can you delete it. Character AI offers a model-training opt-out to users in the EEA and the UK, and not to users in the US.
• Does it hold real hard lines. Anything advertising literally no limits is telling you it has no adults in the room, which is a warning, not a feature.
• Is the price honest, with no metered surprise once you are invested in a conversation.

Does uncensored mean no limits?

No, and this is worth being blunt about because the word gets abused. Uncensored here means free of corporate content filters, canned refusals, and moral commentary. It does not mean free of law or ethics. Depravity refuses anything involving minors, anything involving non-consent, and anything that helps with genuinely illegal harm. Those lines are not negotiable and they are not marketing.

The distinction matters practically, not just morally. A product with no lines at all is a product that will not exist in a year, and it is not a place to invest hundreds of hours of conversation.

Who can see the characters you make on Character AI?

This is the part of Character AI that almost nobody compares, and it matters more than the filter to anyone who has spent real time writing a character. Character AI documents three visibility states in its own guide. Public means "Anyone can talk with this Character, and it will appear in public listings and search results." Unlisted means "Only people that know the link can talk to the Character, and it will not appear in public listings or in search results." Private means "Only you can talk to the Character, even if you try to share a link to it."

There is a second setting underneath that one, and it catches people out. Character AI separates who may chat with a character from who may see how it was built. Its documentation states that the Private Definition setting "only hides the longer Definition field", and that "All other characteristics of your Character (name, greeting, short and long description, categories, image settings, etc) will all be visible if they can chat with the Character at all." So the greeting and descriptions you wrote are readable by anyone who can open the character, whatever you set the definition to.

Then there is remixing. In its own words, "Remixing will use one Character's attributes as a starting template for a new Character", with a control over whether other people may view the details or remix it, where "The Viewable state will block remixing, but still allow users to view all the details." None of this is hidden or underhanded; Character AI documents it plainly, which is more than several rivals manage. The point is that on a public library platform the default direction of travel is publication, and a lot of people work that out after the fact rather than before.

Depravity works the other way round for a simple structural reason: there is no builder and no library here, so there is nothing to list, nothing to search and nothing to remix. That is a genuine loss if designing and sharing characters is the hobby you came for, and if it is, Character AI is the better product for you and we would rather say so. What Character.AI admits about memory and accuracy in its own guide

The most useful document about Character.AI is not a review, it is the Character Guide the company publishes itself, and it is unusually candid about the product's limits. On memory it says that as a conversation grows, a Character "may forget things you told it early in the conversation but didn't repeat after that". No token figure appears anywhere in that guide, so there is no published number telling you when a long story will start losing its beginning.

It is equally direct about factual reliability. Under a heading called Factuality it states plainly that "Characters Make Things Up" and warns that any Character "may confidently tell you things that are verifiably false". For roleplay that shows up as invented events, forgotten relationships, and a character quietly drifting out of voice, which is the complaint most people describe without knowing the company already documented it.

The image side carries its own caveat. The guide says image generation "may fail to produce accurate images of your Character" and gives the example that it "may not be able to generate a particular Character from a movie", because the visual knowledge of the system is not aligned with the textual knowledge. If you are building a character from an existing series, expect the writing to hold up better than the pictures.

The reason to read the paragraphs above is not that we win on every line. It is that a company describing its own weaknesses that plainly is worth more attention than a roundup that describes none.
