The best DreamGen alternative depends on why you are leaving. If you mostly roleplay with one or two characters and are tired of watching credits, Depravity costs $15 a month or $12 billed yearly, allows explicit content between consenting adults in its own rules, and every plan is unlimited chat. If you write long stories and want model choice, NovelAI ($10 to $25 a month) or Sudowrite are closer swaps. DreamGen itself lists Starter at $7.83, Advanced at $19.35 and Pro at $48.30 a month, and only Pro makes every writing model free of credits.
We read DreamGen's pricing page and its full pricing FAQ, its Terms of Service and its privacy policy (both marked "Updated: 2026/03/23") on September 30, 2026. The NovelAI, Sudowrite and SpicyChat figures come from their own pages, read between September 17 and September 26, 2026. We make one of the products compared here, so weigh our view accordingly. Where DreamGen is the better buy, and on privacy it is a strong one, we say so.
Why people look for a DreamGen alternative
DreamGen is a serious product. It hosts its own fine-tuned models, lets you pick from a long list of open models, supports both story writing and roleplay, and its terms are permissive for adults. Nobody leaves it because it refuses a scene.
People leave because of the meter. Everything on DreamGen runs on credits, and the pricing FAQ is candid about what a message costs: it depends on "Which AI model you're using", "How long your story or role-play is so far (measured in tokens)", "How long the AI's response is" and your plan. Put simply, the longer a roleplay runs, the more each reply costs, which is backwards from how a long relationship with a character should feel. The other common reasons are the setup work (scenarios, character definitions and model settings before the first line) and context windows that stay small on the cheaper plans.
How much does DreamGen cost?
DreamGen has a free tier and three paid plans. The pricing page shows each plan at a list price with a first-month discount beside it (20% off Starter and Advanced, 30% off Pro). These are the list prices.
| Plan | US price a month | Monthly credits | Daily credits after that | Context window | Models without credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited | Limited | About 4,000 to 5,000 tokens | None |
| Starter | $7.83 | 375 | 45 | 5,000 tokens | None. Starter pays credits for all model use |
| Advanced | $19.35 | 2,250 | 75 | Up to 15,000 on the small models, 8,000 on the larger ones | The small writing and roleplay models |
| Pro | $48.30 | 2,250 | 75 | 30,000 to 60,000 tokens depending on the model | All current writing and roleplay models. Images still cost credits |
Three details from DreamGen's own FAQ change what these numbers mean. First, the pricing page lists "Unlimited* access to basic AI models" and "Unlimited* access to premium AI models" on every paid card, but the FAQ says "Free & Starter: Pay credits for all model usage". Unlimited only starts at Advanced, and only for the small models. Second, monthly and daily credits "do not roll over or accumulate", so an unused month is gone. Third, "unlimited" carries a fair-use note aimed at automation and account sharing; normal writing and roleplay is fine.
The practical reading: if you want DreamGen without thinking about credits on its better models, the real price is Pro at $48.30 a month.
Does DreamGen allow NSFW?
Its terms are permissive. Section 4.2 lists what you may not generate, and there are two items: content that is "illegal in the United States, the countries of the European Free Trade Association, or in your own jurisdiction", and content that "Depicts, describes, or promotes sexual content involving minors, including fictional minors". There is no general ban on explicit content, and you must be 18 and "of the age of majority in your jurisdiction" to use it.
That is broader than our own rules in one respect. We also refuse anything non-consensual, including dark romance framed as fiction. If that genre is central to what you write, DreamGen will let you do things we will not, and you should stay.
What DreamGen does better than we do
Privacy, for a start, and it deserves credit. DreamGen's privacy policy says it does "not use your data (such as scenario definitions, or story and role-play history) to train or improve AI models unless you explicitly opt in", that the setting is "off by default", and that private stories and roleplays "are not accessed or reviewed by any person" unless you publish them, appeal a moderation decision or opt in to training. That is one of the clearest policies in this category. One caveat from the same document: when demand is high, requests "may be routed to vetted third-party providers".
It also beats us on model choice (you can pick the model per story, including third-party ones), on story mode for long prose, and on the size of the context window on Pro. We do not offer a model menu, a story editor or scenario sharing. If those are the features you use every day, stay on DreamGen.
Refunds, cancelling and the fine print
DreamGen's two documents disagree about refunds. The Terms of Service say "All purchases are final and non-refundable", except where consumer law requires a refund or "At the sole discretion of the Service". The pricing FAQ says "We offer prorated refunds", asks you to email refunds@dreamgen.com from your registered address, and says it looks at days remaining, "Credits used" and "Whether you've asked for a refund before", with most refunds "processed within 2 business days". In practice the FAQ is the friendlier promise, but the terms are what you agreed to.
Cancelling is simple: Account, then Billing, then "Cancel Subscription". The plan runs to the end of the period. Disputes are a different matter. The terms are governed by Swiss law, send disputes to binding arbitration seated in Zurich, and waive class actions. For a US subscriber that is an unusual forum, and worth knowing before you pay for a year.

Who should switch, and to what
You roleplay with one or two characters and hate the meter. Then most of what you pay DreamGen for is credits and context, not the model menu. A companion built for long adult conversations fits better. That is what Depravity is: an adult AI roleplay chat where every plan is unlimited, explicit content between consenting adults is allowed in writing, and the character keeps its voice and history across sessions.
You write prose, not chat. DreamGen's story mode is good, and if you are leaving it, go to another writing tool rather than a chat. NovelAI or Sudowrite will serve you better than we will, and our AI smut writer page compares them on what each permits. If what you actually want is a model that drafts in your own voice from your back catalogue, that is a different kind of product: an AI trained on the documents you have already written.
You care most about privacy. Honestly, DreamGen's policy is strong: no training without opt-in and no human reading your private stories by default. Ours also says chats are encrypted, never sold, never shared and never used to train advertising, and that automated and human review exist to enforce our three hard lines. Read both and pick the wording you trust.
You want the cheapest way in. DreamGen Starter at $7.83 is cheaper than our Open plan. It is also metered on every model, so compare what a month of your actual use would cost before deciding.
Frequently asked questions
Is DreamGen free?
Partly. DreamGen has a free tier with access to all current models, limited monthly and daily credits and a context window of about 4,000 to 5,000 tokens. Credit packs are only sold to subscribers. Paid plans start at $7.83 a month for Starter, which still pays credits on every model.
How much is DreamGen Pro?
DreamGen Pro lists at $48.30 a month, with a 30% first-month discount shown on the pricing page. It is the only plan with unlimited use of every current writing and roleplay model, 30,000 to 60,000 tokens of context depending on the model, and a 20% discount on credit packs. Images still cost credits.
Does DreamGen allow NSFW?
Yes, within its terms. DreamGen's Terms of Service ban only content that is illegal in the US, the EFTA countries or your jurisdiction, and sexual content involving minors, including fictional minors. Users must be 18 and of legal age where they live.
Does DreamGen give refunds?
Its documents disagree. The terms call all purchases "final and non-refundable" unless the law requires otherwise or DreamGen decides to, while the pricing FAQ offers prorated refunds by email to refunds@dreamgen.com, weighing days left, credits used and past refund requests.
Is DreamGen safe and private?
By its own policy, it is one of the better ones. DreamGen does not train on your stories unless you opt in (off by default), and people do not read private stories unless you publish, appeal or opt in. Requests can be routed to third-party model providers at busy times.
What is the best DreamGen alternative for NSFW roleplay?
For one-on-one adult roleplay without a credit meter, Depravity allows explicit content between consenting adults in its own rules, with unlimited chat from $12 a month billed yearly. For long prose with model choice, NovelAI is the closest swap.
