The best AI for writing smut depends on how you write. For a full manuscript, Sudowrite on its Muse model, which its own guide rates "Virtually none" on content filtering, from $10 a month billed yearly. For encrypted long-form, NovelAI from $10. For dark romance, ErosWriter at $99 a year. For drafting a scene by conversation or roleplay with no credits to run out, Depravity at $15 a month or $12 billed yearly. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini will not write the explicit parts at all.
We read the pricing pages, model documentation and terms of Sudowrite, NovelAI, ErosWriter, River, DreamGen and Novelcrafter on September 25, 2026, and every quotation below is the vendor's own. We make one of these products, so weigh our picks with that in mind. Where a competitor is the better buy for your kind of writing, we say so.
Which AI is best for writing smut?
Start with the shape of your work, not with a feature list. A writer finishing a 90,000-word romance needs a different tool from someone who writes a short scene on a Friday night, and a dark romance author has a different problem from both. This is how the paid options sort out.
| If you are writing | Buy | Entry price | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| A full novel with chapters and a story bible | Sudowrite, on the Muse model | $19 a month, or $10 billed yearly, for 225,000 credits | A real manuscript workspace, and Muse "won't shy away from adult content" |
| Long-form fiction you want nobody else to read | NovelAI | $10 a month (Tablet) | Stories "are encrypted in your browser", unlimited text from Tablet up |
| Dark romance, BDSM, monster romance | ErosWriter | $19 a month or $99 a year | Built for erotica only, names just one exclusion: "any sexual depiction of minors" |
| Occasional scenes, several models | River, pay as you go | $0 plus usage, or $14 a month for $20 of credit | "No hard limit beyond River's ban on illegal content" |
| Scenes and dialogue drafted by talking or roleplay | Depravity | $15 a month, or $12 billed yearly | Unlimited chat, no credits, explicit adult content allowed in writing |
| Your own model, your own rules | Novelcrafter | Localized by region; bring your own key | It generates nothing itself, so the model you connect sets the limits |
Sudowrite is the best AI for writing smut in a full manuscript
Sudowrite is the most complete writing workspace on this list, and it is also the one where the answer to "will it write this?" changes with a dropdown. Its model guide describes three tiers of permission. Muse, its own model, is rated "Content Filter Level: Virtually none" with the note "Muse won't shy away from adult content." Excellent is "Incredibly permissive" but "may imply rather than explicitly describe adult situations." Basic, built on GPT-4o Mini, is "Strict, inheriting OpenAI's content moderation" and "may refuse or severely water down mature content in erotica."
So if you buy Sudowrite for smut, pick Muse and stay on it. Pricing is by credits: Hobby and Student is $19 a month for 225,000, Professional $29 for 1,000,000, and Max $59 for 2,000,000, with Max credits that "rollover for 12 months". Billed yearly, the same plans are $10, $22 and $44 a month, according to Sudowrite's own plans page, which also offers a refund if you email within the first week. One line in the terms is worth knowing: use "for any obscene or immoral purpose" is prohibited. The model guide and the terms were plainly written by different people, and we would not read the clause as a ban, but it is there. If the credit meter or the model menu is why you are shopping, we compared the options for writers leaving it in Sudowrite alternative for explicit fiction.
NovelAI is the best AI for private long-form erotica
NovelAI's strongest claim is privacy, and it states it precisely: "We can not access or read your stories... they are encrypted in your browser, so all story data at rest on our servers is encrypted and nobody but you can read your stories." For someone writing under a pen name they want kept separate from their life, that sentence is worth more than any feature.
Plans are $10 a month for Tablet, $15 for Scroll and $25 for Opus, with unlimited text generation from Tablet up and a 28,672-token memory on Opus. Its current models are fine-tunes of open models, Erato on Llama 3 70B and Xialong on GLM-4.6. What we could not find is a first-hand statement that explicit text is permitted. The FAQ and terms we read say nothing either way beyond requiring users to be 18. Its reputation as unfiltered comes from users, not from the vendor. If you are already on NovelAI and weighing a move, our NovelAI alternative page covers its refund and export terms.
ErosWriter and River are the best AI for dark romance
This is where we lose, and we would rather say it than have you find out after paying. Depravity will not write non-consent, and a lot of dark romance is built on it. ErosWriter lists "dark romance, BDSM, LGBTQ+ erotica, monster romance" and names "any sexual depiction of minors" as its exclusion. It costs $19 a month or $99 a year, which works out to about $8.25 a month and makes it the cheapest annual plan here, with a three-day trial and "a discreet descriptor" on your card statement.
River takes a different approach: a general writing app with an uncensored mode that states "no hard limit beyond River's ban on illegal content." It sells monthly AI credit, $20 for $14, $45 for $36 or $140 for $100, and credits do not roll over. If you write only a few scenes a month, its pay-as-you-go option may cost less than any subscription on this page, ours included.
SmutGPT is the other name that comes up here. It offers six prose-style models plus image and video makers, but it prices only in euros, meters Starter and Pro by daily tokens, and makes every payment final. Its FAQ also claims "no content restrictions" while its terms ban six categories. We set out its plans and the alternatives in SmutGPT alternative and pricing.
Depravity is the best AI for writing smut by conversation
Some writers do not draft in a document at all. They talk the scene out: set up two characters, trade lines, try the moment three ways, then keep the version that works. That is the use our product fits, because it is an uncensored chat rather than an editor. You describe the characters, the setting and how explicit you want it, it writes the passage in full, and you revise by instruction ("slower", "from his point of view", "end on the line about the door") instead of regenerating from scratch. You can also play one character yourself and let it play the other, which is how a lot of writers find dialogue they could not write alone.
Every plan is unlimited chat with no credit meter. Open is $15 a month or $12 billed yearly, Unfiltered $29 or $24 adds multiple companions, deeper memory and a custom personality, and Boundless is $59 or $49. Our hard lines are minors, non-consent and anything illegal; everything else between adults is written as explicitly as you ask. We put the full comparison, with every vendor's own wording, on our AI smut writer page, and if you would rather play the scene than write it up, see AI roleplay chat.
Which AI will not write smut?
The mainstream assistants. OpenAI's Model Spec gives its rule against generating erotica for ordinary users system-level authority, which means no user instruction is meant to override it, and Sudowrite's own blog says "Claude and ChatGPT block explicit content by default." Gemini sits in the same group. You can get them to write the tension and the kiss, and then they cut to morning.
The same applies inside tools that run those models underneath, which is the trap in Sudowrite's Basic mode. If a writing app does not say which model it uses, ask before you pay. We covered why no prompt switches this off, with the dated specification text, in how to turn off the ChatGPT filter.
How much should you pay for an AI smut writer?
For most writers, $100 to $180 a year. Here is what a year actually costs at the listed prices.
| Plan | Billed monthly for a year | Annual plan | What runs out |
|---|---|---|---|
| ErosWriter | $228 | $99 | Nothing stated, "unlimited stories" |
| NovelAI Tablet | $120 | None listed | Text is unlimited; image credits are separate |
| NovelAI Opus | $300 | None listed | Text is unlimited |
| Sudowrite Hobby and Student | $228 | $120 | 225,000 credits a month |
| River Basic | $168 | None listed | $20 of AI credit a month, no rollover |
| Depravity Open | $180 | $144 | Nothing, unlimited chat |
The number that matters more than the sticker is what stops you mid-scene. Credit plans are cheap until a long revision session eats the month. Unlimited plans cost more up front and never interrupt. Decide which of those you would rather live with.
If the writing is also income, the tool is only half the stack. Plenty of erotica authors now sell serialized stories directly to paying readers, and a subscription platform built for women creators is one way to do that without routing every chapter through a retailer's content rules. Amazon KDP, for instance, asks authors to disclose AI-generated content at upload.

If you draft by talking, try the chat above: give it two characters and a room, and see whether it writes the scene or cuts away. Plans start at $12 a month billed yearly, and you cancel from inside your account. If you need a manuscript editor instead, buy Sudowrite and select Muse; if you need non-consent, buy ErosWriter. Either way, you will know before you pay.
