Charstar AI Alternative Now That It Is Down

Charstar AI is down and has been since early 2026. Since February 6, 2026, charstar.ai has answered every request with the same hosting error, "The deployment could not be found", and it still did on October 14, 2026. The last working capture of the site is from September 5, 2025. Characters and chats stored only on Charstar cannot be recovered. We checked charstar.ai directly on October 14, 2026, went through its captures in the Internet Archive, read the privacy policy it left behind, and searched the US App Store. Every Charstar fact below comes from those sources, with the date we saw it. Where we could not confirm something, we say so.

Is Charstar AI down?

Yes. charstar.ai still resolves to its hosting provider, but the provider replies with a 404 and the plain-text message "The deployment could not be found", which means the site's code has been removed from the host. The www address does not answer at all. This is not a slow evening or a maintenance page. There is no app left behind that address to load.

The timeline is short and easy to check. The Internet Archive captured a working Charstar homepage on September 5, 2025. Its next captures of the homepage, on February 6, March 4 and March 27, 2026, all recorded the same 404. The domain registration is still active until April 18, 2027 and was last updated on August 12, 2026, so someone still holds the name. A held name is not a running service, and we found no announcement of a shutdown or a relaunch on any page the archive kept.

What Charstar was

The last working homepage described Charstar as a place to "Create, discover, and chat with virtual characters supported by the latest advancements in open-source AI." It worked like a smaller Character.AI: a feed of community-made characters with view counts in the millions, a creation tool, and category tabs for Anime, Romance, Horror, Games, VTubers and more. One of those tabs was labeled NSFW.

We could not find a price for anything on the archived homepage, so we are not going to print one. If you paid Charstar for something, check your card statement for the merchant name before you assume the charge has stopped.

What Charstar's privacy policy said

The privacy policy, last updated October 25, 2023, names the operator as Charstar LLC. Three parts of it matter now that the service is gone.

• Your chats were collected. The policy lists "chat communications, posted images, and shared Characters" as User Content it collected from you.
• They could train the models. Among the uses listed: "to train our artificial intelligence/machine learning models".
• The age floor was 13. "The Services are not designed for minors under 13", and the terms prohibited use by anyone under 13, or under 16 in the European Economic Area. That is the same app whose menu had an NSFW tab.

The policy also allows data to be disclosed in connection with "any merger, sale of company assets, financing, or acquisition". When a service goes dark without a notice, that is the clause that governs whatever it still holds. If you used your real name or main email there and you are worried about where it ends up, a personal data removal service can find that name and email on people-search sites and get them taken down. It is a separate job from finding a new chat app, but it is the one most people forget.

Watch out for Charstar lookalike apps

Searching "charstar" in the US App Store on October 14, 2026 returned two apps with Charstar in the name. Neither is sold by Charstar LLC. One, "Charstar AI - AI Talkie Chat", is listed by an individual developer, rated 9+, and has a single rating. The other is listed by a Malaysian company. We are not saying either one is harmful. We are saying neither is the service you used, and anything you type into it goes to a different company under different terms.

This happens to most companion brands once they go quiet. We checked which "uncensored" app listings come from the real company and which are lookalikes in uncensored AI apps: real or lookalike.

Can I get my Charstar characters or chats back?

Private chats, no. They lived on Charstar's servers, and with the deployment removed there is no login, no export button and no support channel that can reach them. Any site offering to recover them is guessing.

Public characters are a different story. The archive captured many charstar.ai user pages in 2025, and a public character's description and greeting are often readable there. Search the archive for your profile address, copy what you wrote, and rebuild the character somewhere you can export from. Then keep that copy outside the app.
