Why do people look for a Janitor AI alternative?

Rarely because of the content policy. Janitor AI already allows adult roleplay, so people are not usually leaving to find something less filtered. They leave over friction. The most common complaints are the model setup if you want something better than the default, capacity at peak hours, and memory that runs out mid-conversation and takes the character with it.

The setup complaint has genuinely shrunk. For a long time the honest description of Janitor AI was "free, but bring your own API key," and that is no longer accurate. Be careful what you read about pricing here. Several sites list a "$9.99 Janitor Pro" plan, and it does not appear in any of Janitor AI's own announcements. It also contradicts the June 2026 post describing janitor+ as its first subscription product. That number looks like it was invented once and copied since, which is a good reminder to check pricing against the source rather than a roundup. Does Janitor AI require age verification in the US?

No. As of July 2026 Janitor AI requires age verification in Australia, Brazil and the United Kingdom only. Its own help documentation is unusually direct about it: if you are outside those countries, nothing changes for you. Australia and Brazil came first in April 2026, the UK followed in June 2026, and the company has said it has no plans to extend it further.

You will find headlines claiming Janitor AI now forces face-photo verification on everyone. That is not supported by its own documentation, and we checked its announcement feed through mid-July 2026 without finding any change. Where verification does apply, the stated methods are local facial age estimation, government ID that is deleted immediately, or a third-party AgeKey.

What do you actually gain by paying?

This is the fair question, given that the thing you are comparing against costs nothing. Four things, and if none of them matter to you then the free option is the right call.

• Time. No keys, no proxies, no setup thread. The gap between deciding to talk and talking is about ten seconds.
• Memory that holds the thread across sessions, rather than a character quietly losing the plot when context runs out.
• Accountability. There is a named company, a published privacy policy, and an export-and-delete button. With free adult AI products, you frequently cannot establish who is holding your conversations.
• Consistency at peak hours, because the capacity is paid for by subscriptions rather than stretched across everyone at once.

Is Janitor AI safe to use?

Its content rules are clearer than most people assume. Janitor AI is 18+ and explicitly prohibits underage personas under all circumstances, along with incest, fetishized torture, and visual depictions of suicide attempts. That is a real policy, publicly stated, and it puts it well ahead of the anonymous end of this market.

The part we cannot answer for you is the data question. We tried to verify Janitor AI's retention and training policy from its own published documentation and could not retrieve it, so we are not going to characterize it either way.
