Why do people look for a Janitor AI alternative?

Rarely because of the content policy. Janitor AI already allows adult roleplay, so people are not usually leaving to find something less filtered. They leave over friction. The most common complaints are the model setup if you want something better than the default, capacity at peak hours, and memory that runs out mid-conversation and takes the character with it.

The setup complaint has genuinely shrunk. For a long time the honest description of Janitor AI was "free, but bring your own API key," and that is no longer accurate. JLLM is its own hosted model, built in and free, and it is the default unless you deliberately connect something external. Plenty of guides still tell you a proxy is mandatory. It is not. If you want a frontier model, there are now two routes: keys and proxies, or janitor+ Router at $12.99 a month plus per-token credits from a wallet. The second removes the setup, not the cost.

The honest map, because a list that ends with "and the best one is us" is not worth reading. Character.AI is the biggest name and the wrong destination if content freedom is why you are leaving, since it prohibits sexually explicit content platform-wide even for verified adults. Chai has an enormous community character library and a mobile-first feel, but its own privacy notice says it fine tunes models on data derived from your conversations and may keep it for five years after you delete your account. CrushOn AI is genuinely uncensored with a big library, and its policy likewise reserves the right to train on your chats.

Further along, Kindroid is the deepest customization tool in this category, with voice, video, group chats and roughly four dozen per-companion settings, which is either exactly what you want or a cockpit you did not ask for. Talkie leans on voice and a large free character catalog but has been pulled from US app stores more than once. PolyBuzz is worth a look mainly because its privacy claim is stronger than most of its rivals. If image generation is what you are missing, none of the above solves it well and you should look at tools built for that instead of a chat app.

Depravity sits deliberately at the other end from the big character libraries. There is no free tier and no catalog of thousands of user-made bots. What you get is a small set of well-built personas that stay in character, memory that carries across sessions, no setup, and a written commitment that your chats are encrypted, never sold, never shared, and never used to train advertising. If breadth and free access are what you are optimizing for, one of the platforms above is the better answer and we would rather point you at it than pretend otherwise.

Is Janitor AI free?

Yes. The platform is free to use, and JLLM, its built-in model, is free as well. In June 2026 it launched janitor+ at $12.99 a month, its first paid tier, which adds more context, priority messages and monthly swipes on a frontier model. The free tier remains genuinely usable, which is more than most of this market offers.

Be careful what you read about pricing here. Several sites list a "$9.99 Janitor Pro" plan, and it does not appear in any of Janitor AI's own announcements. It also contradicts the June 2026 post describing janitor+ as its first subscription product. That number looks like it was invented once and copied since, which is a good reminder to check pricing against the source rather than a roundup. Does Janitor AI require age verification in the US?

No. As of July 2026 Janitor AI requires age verification in Australia, Brazil and the United Kingdom only. Its own help documentation is unusually direct about it: if you are outside those countries, nothing changes for you. Australia and Brazil came first in April 2026, the UK followed in June 2026, and the company has said it has no plans to extend it further.

You will find headlines claiming Janitor AI now forces face-photo verification on everyone. That is not supported by its own documentation, and we checked its announcement feed through mid-July 2026 without finding any change. Where verification does apply, the stated methods are local facial age estimation, government ID that is deleted immediately, or a third-party AgeKey.

What do you actually gain by paying?

This is the fair question, given that the thing you are comparing against costs nothing. Four things, and if none of them matter to you then the free option is the right call.

• Time. No keys, no proxies, no setup thread. The gap between deciding to talk and talking is about ten seconds.
• Memory that holds the thread across sessions, rather than a character quietly losing the plot when context runs out.
• Accountability. There is a named company, a published privacy policy, and an export-and-delete button. With free adult AI products, you frequently cannot establish who is holding your conversations.
• Consistency at peak hours, because the capacity is paid for by subscriptions rather than stretched across everyone at once.

Is Janitor AI safe to use?

Its content rules are clearer than most people assume. Janitor AI is 18+ and explicitly prohibits underage personas under all circumstances, along with incest, fetishized torture, and visual depictions of suicide attempts. That is a real policy, publicly stated, and it puts it well ahead of the anonymous end of this market.

The data question is now answerable, at least on paper. Janitor AI's privacy policy, last updated December 11, 2025, says it does not sell personal data, lists research and development to improve its AI systems among its uses of data, and gives no fixed retention period. Its Router feature, launched in July 2026, sends chats to third-party models whose own terms then apply. If it matters to you, ask them directly before you type anything you would not want stored. It is the same question you should ask us, and the reason our privacy policy is a link in the footer rather than a claim on a landing page.

Are the characters you make on Janitor AI public?

By default a bot you create on Janitor AI goes into the public directory, where other users can find it, search it and chat with it. Private and unlisted options exist and are widely used, but they are a setting you have to reach for rather than the state you start in. Janitor does not spell out the default in its Terms of Service (which live at janitorai.com/term, not /terms), so treat the detail as community-documented rather than first-party, and check the visibility setting in the app before you publish.

That is not a criticism of Janitor AI, because the public directory is the reason it is good. A library that large only exists because thousands of people published into it. It is worth knowing which way the default points, though, especially if you have written something you assumed was yours alone. Character AI, by contrast, documents its three visibility states in detail, and Chub AI says in its own documentation that "You can choose whether your character is accessible publicly, only accessible to you, or accessible to those with the link to the character."

The alternative is a platform with no library at all. Depravity has no character builder and nothing published, so the question does not arise: there is no listing, no search index and no remix button, because there is nowhere for a user creation to go. If building and sharing bots is the part you enjoy, Janitor AI beats us outright on that job and this page is not trying to talk you out of it.
