Short answer

Janitor AI permits adult roleplay, is free to use, and since 2026 ships its own built-in model called JLLM, so a bring-your-own API key is no longer required. Its age verification applies only in Australia, Brazil and the UK, and US users are unaffected. The honest reasons to look for an alternative are practical rather than moral: setup friction if you route to an external model, peak-time reliability, memory that runs short, and the fact that its data-retention policy is hard to verify. Depravity is a paid, purpose-built alternative for US adults 18 and over, with nothing to configure, from $15 a month.

Janitor AI is genuinely good at what it does, and it is free, so let us be straight about the trade. You are paying here for polish, memory that holds, and a company with its name on the privacy policy. Uncensored means free of corporate filters, not free of law, so the hard lines around minors, non-consent, and anything illegal stay firmly in place.

What makes it feel honest

Janitor AI alternative, the way it should feel

No proxy, no API key

Nothing to paste, nothing to configure, no setup guide to read before your first message. You just talk.

Memory that holds

It follows the thread across sessions instead of forgetting who you are the moment the context runs out.

A real company behind it

A published privacy policy, chats you can export or delete, and stated hard lines. Not an anonymous app.

Honest comparison

Janitor AI compared with Depravity, honestly

Janitor AI Depravity
Price Free to use. Its first paid tier, janitor+, launched June 2026 at $12.99 a month. From $15 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly. No free plan.
Adult content Permitted. The mobile app turns it off by default to satisfy Apple and Google store rules; you re-enable it in settings. Permitted within firm legal and ethical lines
Setup JLLM is built in, so no API key is needed. Connecting an external model still means an API key or proxy. Nothing to configure. Pick a companion and talk.
Age verification Required in Australia, Brazil and the UK only. US users are unaffected. Adults 18 and over
Character library Very large, millions of user-made bots A small curated set of companions
What happens to your chats We could not verify its retention or training policy from Janitor AI's own published documentation. Never sold, never shared, never used to train advertising. Encrypted, and yours to export or delete.
Hard lines Prohibits underage personas, incest, fetishized torture, and visual depictions of suicide attempts. 18+ only. Nothing involving minors, non-consent, or anything illegal. Ever.

Janitor AI details come from its own announcements, help center and content guidelines, checked July 2026. Two things worth saying plainly: Janitor AI is free and we are not, and its character library is orders of magnitude larger than ours. If those are what matter most to you, use Janitor AI. Note also that widely circulated claims of a "$9.99 Janitor Pro tier" appear in no primary source and contradict Janitor's own June 2026 announcement that janitor+ is its first subscription product.

Why do people look for a Janitor AI alternative?

Rarely because of the content policy. Janitor AI already allows adult roleplay, so people are not usually leaving to find something less filtered. They leave over friction. The most common complaints are the model setup if you want something better than the default, capacity at peak hours, and memory that runs out mid-conversation and takes the character with it.

The setup complaint has genuinely shrunk. For a long time the honest description of Janitor AI was "free, but bring your own API key," and that is no longer accurate. JLLM is its own hosted model, built in and free, and it is the default unless you deliberately connect something external. Plenty of guides still tell you a proxy is mandatory. It is not. If you want to route to a frontier model, though, you are back to keys, proxies and troubleshooting, and that is where most of the friction still lives.

Is Janitor AI free?

Yes. The platform is free to use, and JLLM, its built-in model, is free as well. In June 2026 it launched janitor+ at $12.99 a month, its first paid tier, which adds more context, priority messages and monthly swipes on a frontier model. The free tier remains genuinely usable, which is more than most of this market offers.

Be careful what you read about pricing here. Several sites list a "$9.99 Janitor Pro" plan, and it does not appear in any of Janitor AI's own announcements. It also contradicts the June 2026 post describing janitor+ as its first subscription product. That number looks like it was invented once and copied since, which is a good reminder to check pricing against the source rather than a roundup. Ours included: check our pricing page, not this paragraph.

Does Janitor AI require age verification in the US?

No. As of July 2026 Janitor AI requires age verification in Australia, Brazil and the United Kingdom only. Its own help documentation is unusually direct about it: if you are outside those countries, nothing changes for you. Australia and Brazil came first in April 2026, the UK followed in June 2026, and the company has said it has no plans to extend it further.

You will find headlines claiming Janitor AI now forces face-photo verification on everyone. That is not supported by its own documentation, and we checked its announcement feed through mid-July 2026 without finding any change. Where verification does apply, the stated methods are local facial age estimation, government ID that is deleted immediately, or a third-party AgeKey.

What do you actually gain by paying?

This is the fair question, given that the thing you are comparing against costs nothing. Four things, and if none of them matter to you then the free option is the right call.

  • Time. No keys, no proxies, no setup thread. The gap between deciding to talk and talking is about ten seconds.
  • Memory that holds the thread across sessions, rather than a character quietly losing the plot when context runs out.
  • Accountability. There is a named company, a published privacy policy, and an export-and-delete button. With free adult AI products, you frequently cannot establish who is holding your conversations.
  • Consistency at peak hours, because the capacity is paid for by subscriptions rather than stretched across everyone at once.

Is Janitor AI safe to use?

Its content rules are clearer than most people assume. Janitor AI is 18+ and explicitly prohibits underage personas under all circumstances, along with incest, fetishized torture, and visual depictions of suicide attempts. That is a real policy, publicly stated, and it puts it well ahead of the anonymous end of this market.

The part we cannot answer for you is the data question. We tried to verify Janitor AI's retention and training policy from its own published documentation and could not retrieve it, so we are not going to characterize it either way. That is not an accusation, it is a gap. If it matters to you, ask them directly before you type anything you would not want stored. It is the same question you should ask us, and the reason our privacy policy is a link in the footer rather than a claim on a landing page.

Good to know

Questions about your janitor ai alternative

Yes. The platform and its built-in JLLM model are free to use. In June 2026 it added janitor+ at $12.99 a month, its first paid tier, which adds context, priority messages and frontier-model swipes. Claims of a $9.99 "Pro" plan appear in no primary source.
No, not anymore. JLLM is built in and is the default model unless you connect an external one yourself. Many guides still say a proxy is mandatory and they are out of date. Routing to an external frontier model does still require a key or proxy.
No. As of July 2026 it applies in Australia, Brazil and the UK only, and Janitor AI states that nothing changes for users outside those countries. It has said it has no plans to roll it out elsewhere.
It depends what is bothering you. Janitor AI already permits adult content, so if the filter is your only concern you may not need to move. If setup friction, memory or reliability are the problem, a purpose-built paid product like Depravity removes those. A self-hosted model is the most private option if you have the hardware.
For zero setup, memory that holds across sessions, consistent capacity at peak hours, and a named company with a published privacy policy and an export-and-delete button. If none of those matter to you, the free option is genuinely the better call and we would rather say so.
They are encrypted in transit and at rest, never sold, never shared with data brokers or marketers, and never used to train advertising. You can review, export or delete any conversation from your settings. We use automated and human review only to enforce our hard lines on prohibited content.
