What is Chub AI, and what changed in 2026?

Chub AI, which many people still call Chub Venus after its older interface, is a character roleplay platform built around a community card library. Users write characters, publish them, and other users chat with them. Around that sits a set of tools that are genuinely good: Lorebooks for keeping world details consistent across a long roleplay, an image generator, and API proxy keys so you can drive Chub characters from a third-party front end. For breadth of characters it has no real competitor, and if that is what you are optimizing for, none of what follows should talk you out of it.

What changed is the commercial layer. Reviews published through 2026 describe a single announcement that did several things at once: the free tier dropped to about 20 messages a day, most of the built-in models were deprecated in favor of a smaller in-house set, and payment moved to cryptocurrency only. Chub's own subscription page, read September 17, 2026, confirms the shape of the first part in its own words, "one-time free trial credits amounting to a few dozen messages", and says nothing about payment methods at all. Its Terms of Service do say that "excessively explicit images in general scare the payment processors", which is the pressure the reviews describe. Coherent reasoning; for a US buyer holding a card, still the whole problem in one sentence if the reviews are right.

Worth saying clearly: none of that makes Chub a scam or a dead product. It is a small team choosing survival on its own terms, and there is something to respect in that. It just moved the product further from what most US adults want, which is to type a card number, get a receipt, and use the thing.

Why people search for a Chub AI alternative

The search data is unusually legible here. Alongside "chub ai alternative" sit "is chub ai no longer free", "is chub ai unlimited", "chub ai down", "chub ai dead" and a long tail of error messages. That is not a community objecting to a content policy. It is a community running into a wall on availability, cost and reliability, in that order.

If the payment change is real, it is the one that filters hardest by geography. Buying cryptocurrency in the United States means an exchange account, identity verification, a funding transfer and a network fee, all to pay for a $20 subscription. Plenty of people will do it. Plenty more will decide that a monthly chat subscription is not worth opening a Coinbase account for, and will go looking for something that takes a card. Is Chub AI down?

If you are seeing those, the usual cause is not your account. It is either a platform-side outage or, more commonly, the model backend your setup points at failing to return anything.

That second case is worth understanding because it is structural rather than accidental. Chub is designed so you can bring your own model through an API key or a reverse proxy. That flexibility is a real feature, and it is also a second and a third thing that can break independently of Chub itself. When a proxy dies or an API key runs out of credit, what you see is a generation error inside Chub, which makes Chub look like the thing that is broken. A single hosted service has fewer moving parts and correspondingly fewer ways to fail.

If Chub is genuinely down, there is nothing to do but wait, and refreshing will not help. If instead you are seeing a banner that says some content is restricted in your region, that is not an outage at all. That is the geofence, it is policy rather than a bug, and no amount of reloading will clear it.

Where your prompts actually go when you bring your own key

This is the part of the bring-your-own-model setup that almost nobody thinks about until later. When you connect an outside endpoint, whether that is a commercial API or a reverse proxy someone shared, your prompts and the model's replies travel through that service and are governed by its retention and privacy terms rather than by Chub's. Chub's own terms make this point. It is honest of them to say so, and it is easy to skim past.

For ordinary roleplay that may not bother you. For genuinely candid adult conversation it should at least be a conscious decision, because a shared reverse proxy is an arrangement where a stranger operates the pipe your most personal text flows through, with no policy you can hold them to and no way to audit what is logged. The convenience is real. So is the exposure.

The alternative is not complicated: one service, one policy, one company answerable for it. Depravity hosts the model, so there is no third party in the path. Conversations are encrypted in transit and at rest, never sold, never shared with data brokers or marketers, and never used to train advertising, and you can export or delete any of them yourself. We do run automated and limited human review to enforce the hard lines, and we disclose that rather than leaving it out, because a privacy claim with a quiet exception in it is worse than a narrower claim you can actually rely on.

Where Chub beats us, and where we beat Chub

Chub wins on three things and it is worth being specific about them. The character library is enormous and community-driven, so there is always something new to try that someone else built. The tooling for serious roleplayers is deeper than ours: Lorebooks, presets, and fine control over the model you point it at. And it has a free tier, reduced though it now is, where we have none. If breadth of characters and hands-on control are what you want, Chub is the better product and you should use it.

We win on the things that turned into complaints this year. You can pay with a card. The model is included, so there is no key to buy, no proxy to configure and no third party holding your prompts. There is no daily message ceiling. There is no regional content tier deciding what you are allowed to discuss based on which state you are in. And the price is published rather than reconstructed from review sites, which, given that we could not verify Chub's own pricing from any primary source, is not a small difference.

Who each one is for

Choose Chub AI if the community card library is the point, if you enjoy tuning models and presets, and if whatever payment method its checkout asks for is either something you already use or a minor inconvenience. Those are legitimate preferences and Chub serves them better than we do.

Choose Depravity if you want uncensored adult conversation to work like any other US subscription: a card, a published price, a model that is included, no daily cap, and no regional banner deciding what you can say. Fewer characters, more depth in the ones there are, and a data policy stated in specific enough words that you could hold us to it.

What Chub says about itself in its own documentation

Chub does not hedge about what it is. Its own guide states that Chub "is uncensored" and that it does "not restrict in any meaningful capacity the variety of characters that are allowed to be posted". Very few platforms in this category will put that in writing, and it is the single clearest reason people choose Chub over a larger, more polished competitor.

One line in the same documentation explains the economics of this whole market better than any analysis does. Advising authors on character avatars, it tells them to "try to avoid NSFW images whenever possible, it spooks the payment processors". Content rules here are set by payment processors, app stores and advertisers rather than by law, which is exactly why a permissive platform can tighten without warning and why the biggest platforms end up the strictest.

There is a practical detail worth knowing before you publish anything there. Chub's guide warns that "characters with less than three tags will be hidden in search", so a character with one or two tags is effectively invisible no matter how well it is written. The creator also chooses Public, Private or Unlisted, and self-rates each character SFW or NSFW, which means the rating you see on a character is the author's judgment rather than a moderator's.

Where that leaves the comparison is roughly this.
