Why people look for an AI Dungeon alternative

Usually not because of censorship. AI Dungeon's moderation FAQ says unpublished, single-player content "is never moderated", with no "flags, suspensions, or bans for anything users do in private, single-player play." The one boundary it names is content that sexualizes children. Publishing is a different matter: published scenarios pass an AI rating check and the community guidelines.

The common reasons are money and memory. Context decides how much of your story the AI can see, and AI Dungeon sells it by tier. Its membership guide lists up to 4k tokens free, 8k on Journey at $14.99 a month, 16k on Legend at $29.99, and 32k on Mythic at $49.99 and Ultimate at $99.99. Beyond that, subscribers can spend one Credit per action for more context on some models, and three Shadow tiers sit above Ultimate. A long campaign gets expensive in a way a flat plan does not.

The third reason is format. AI Dungeon is a text adventure with a narrator, Do, Say and Story actions, story cards and plot essentials. If what you actually want is a conversation with one character who remembers you, a chat product fits better and costs less.

Does AI Dungeon allow NSFW?

Yes, for adults who change one setting. AI Dungeon's content safety FAQ describes three AI Safety levels, Safe, Moderate and Mature, which it compares to PG, PG-13 and R, and it calls Mature its "mature 18+ setting". The same page says the AI Safety Setting defaults to Safe, so a new account will not write explicit scenes until you switch it.

Two details are worth knowing before you pay. That FAQ says model outputs are sent to Hive, a third-party scoring service, for a safety score against the level you chose, and that Hive does not store the data or train on it. And the iPhone app is rated 13+ on the US App Store, matching terms that admit users from age 13 and restrict some features to adults. A 13+ product with an 18+ switch is a legitimate design. It is not the same thing as an adults-only service.

AI Dungeon pricing, and where its own pages disagree

On September 27, 2026 AI Dungeon's pricing page listed Journey at $14.99, Legend at $29.99, Mythic at $49.99 and Ultimate at $99.99 a month, and its membership guide pairs them with 760, 1,650, 2,750 and 5,200 monthly Credits. Journey and Legend include a one-week trial with purchase, and every plan auto-renews.

Three things do not line up. The US App Store still lists in-app purchases named AI Dungeon Champion at $14.99 and AI Dungeon Adventurer at $9.99, tiers the help center says were renamed to Journey and retired, which is why so many roundups still quote a $9.99 plan. The Shadow tiers FAQ says Ultimate is "able to be purchased by mobile users", yet Ultimate does not appear in the in-app purchase list the App Store shows. And Journey is sold as "DeepSeek Models & 8k Context" while the same pricing page lists DeepSeek on Journey at 4k token context. The 8k applies to AI Dungeon's in-house models.

What AI Dungeon still does better than we do

A lot, and it is worth saying plainly. AI Dungeon is a game engine for stories: scenarios, story cards, plot essentials, author's notes, scripts, a published community library, multiplayer through Voyage, and 14 image models on its pricing page. We have none of that. Depravity is a chat with a small set of personas.

It also runs a free tier, and its moderation FAQ says stories are encrypted and that humans never review cases where the AI hits its boundaries. Our chats are encrypted and never sold, shared or used to train advertising, but our privacy policy discloses automated and human review to enforce our hard lines. If you want a free sandbox or a world builder, AI Dungeon is the better product.

How Depravity works as an AI Dungeon alternative

You play a scene the way you would message someone. All of this works on every plan, with no message cap.

• Set the scene in a sentence. Who they are, where you are, what happens next. The character answers in voice and you answer back.
• Adult from the first message. Accounts are 18 and over and our rules allow explicit content between consenting adults, so there is nothing to unlock.
• Continuity without buying context. Memory carries names, history and preferences across sessions on every plan, and Unfiltered adds deeper memory and a custom personality.
• Out of character when you need it. Ask for a recap, change the pace or push the scene somewhere darker, in plain words.

Before you cancel AI Dungeon

Cancel where you paid. AI Dungeon's terms say a web subscription is cancelled from the subscription settings on your account page and that cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period. Payments made through Apple can only be refunded by Apple. For Google Play, the terms tell you to contact AI Dungeon support.

Do not count on money back for a month you used. The terms offer a discretionary refund to "Inactive Users", people who stopped playing but kept paying, and it "may cover charges incurred after the last month of active use". Save any adventure you care about before you delete anything, because the terms say deleted accounts and their content "cannot be recovered".

Which AI Dungeon alternative should you pick?

Match it to the part of AI Dungeon you want to replace. We would rather point you to a competitor than sell you the wrong product.

• You want a D&D style campaign with rules, dice and a game master: an AI game master built on tabletop rules. A chat will not track your hit points.
• You want to write long fiction with encrypted storage: NovelAI, from $10 a month with unlimited text.

• You want what AI Dungeon already has, only with more context: price out Legend or Mythic before you move. Switching products will not give you story cards.
