FictionLab has no NSFW filter and FictionLab+ is $8.99 a month, but it admits users from 16 and may train on chats. Which alternative fits you.

The right FictionLab alternative depends on what FictionLab is not giving you. FictionLab is cheap and permissive: its own FAQ says it "doesn't have any NSFW or other types of filters", its free tier is generous, and FictionLab+ costs $8.99 a month in its own checkout. People leave it for other reasons: a 16+ minimum age on a platform with no filter, a privacy policy that allows training on your data, no refunds, and a product built for multi-character scenarios rather than one companion who knows you.

We read FictionLab's FAQ, Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, its official documentation (the tiers page, model list and update log), its Google Play listing and the price table inside its own web checkout on October 9, 2026. Every FictionLab figure and quotation below comes from those sources. Prices for other products come from their own pages when we last checked them, and we say when.

How much does FictionLab cost?

FictionLab does not have a public pricing page; fictionlab.ai/pricing returns "Page or scenario not found". The prices sit in the checkout code the site loads for every visitor, in US dollars and euros. Here are the US figures.

PlanMonthlyEvery 3 monthsYearly
Free tier$0n/an/a
FictionLab+$8.99$23.97 ($7.99 a month)$83.88 ($6.99 a month)
FictionLab Ultra$24.99$68.97 ($22.99 a month)$251.88 ($20.99 a month)

Ultra launched on May 24, 2026, and the update log says it is "meant for those who want the absolute best roleplaying experience possible and are willing to pay $24.99/month for it." The same update added Patreon as a second way to subscribe, because "the current checkout flow hasn't been working out" for some users. That brought PayPal and Apple Pay with it.

What the money buys is spelled out on FictionLab's tiers page, which deserves credit for being specific. The free tier gets 32K of AI context, three models, 100 memories and 20 image credits. FictionLab+ gets 131K of context, seven models plus one limited-time model, 500 memories, 200 image credits and longer messages (10,000 characters instead of 1,000). Ultra adds reasoning models, in-chat image generation, 400 image credits and a lore engine that writes its own character cards as you play.

Does FictionLab have an NSFW filter?

No. The FAQ answers the question directly: "FictionLab doesn't have any NSFW or other types of filters. This allows users to be fully immersed in scenarios without annoying refusal messages from the AI. We still require you to follow our TOS." The documentation describes the default free model as "Completely unlimited and unfiltered", and one Ultra model is pitched for "visceral, descriptive prose".

The Terms of Service still carry limits. They ban content that "constitutes sexual exploitation or abuse of a minor", content that is "excessively violent", content that glorifies self-harm, and anything that "in the sole judgment of FictionLab, is objectionable". That last clause gives FictionLab room to remove a scenario or an account later, and the FAQ confirms it uses that room: FictionLab "reserves the right to delete user created scenarios at any time without issuing a reason."

Why people look for a FictionLab alternative

FictionLab's Google Play listing averaged 4.3 stars from 3.22K reviews, with 100K+ downloads, when we read it. Most users are happy. The ones who leave tend to have one of four reasons, and each points somewhere different.

Teenagers on an unfiltered platform. The Terms say "If you are under 16 years old, do not sign up for the Services", and the FAQ repeats that "The platform's minimum age requirement is 16 years." Pair that with no content filter and you get an adult-content platform whose own rules admit 16 and 17 year olds. If you want an adults-only room, this is the reason to move.

Your chats may train the model. FictionLab's FAQ says other users and creators cannot read your messages, which is good. But its Privacy Policy lists, among the uses of your information, to "train our artificial intelligence/machine learning models", and using the report button sends "parts of your chat history" to the developers. Popular public scenarios can also stay live after you delete your account.

No refunds, and the product can change under you. "All Subscription Fees are non-refundable", with no credit for partial periods or downgrades. FictionLab may change the price "at any time", may "degrade" or remove subscription features, and deleting your account ends any paid plan with no refund.

It is built for scenarios, not for one companion. FictionLab says so itself: compared with Character.AI's one-to-one chats, it "is more focused on larger roleplays/interactions with multiple characters." It also admits the free model's memory is limited, so earlier conversations can be "forgotten". If what you want is one character who remembers you between sessions, the design is pointed the other way. There is also no iPhone app yet; the FAQ says the iOS version "will come at a later date".

What FictionLab does better than we do

Price and breadth. FictionLab has a real free tier, and FictionLab+ at $8.99 a month is cheaper than our entry plan. It has a library of community scenarios, free scenario creation, multi-character stories, image generation, a lore system that tracks your world, and a Discord community. If building worlds is your hobby and you want strangers to play them, FictionLab does that and we do not. When you stall on a premise, an AI brainstorming tool that turns one idea into dozens is a better next step than switching platforms.

We are narrower on purpose. Depravity is one uncensored companion chat for adults, with no library, no image generator and no free tier.

Which FictionLab alternative fits you

You love big multi-character scenarios and you are happy with the price. Stay. Upgrade to FictionLab+ if memory is the problem, since that is where the 131K context lives.

You want text adventures where you steer a whole world. AI Dungeon is the closest match, and our AI Dungeon alternative page explains where its pricing gets complicated.

You want a big library of characters made by other people. Janitor AI or SpicyChat. Our best AI for roleplay comparison ranks the field.

You came from a multi-model app like Poe. Read Poe AI alternative first, because points and context work very differently there.

You want one companion, adults only, with rules that allow explicit chat in writing and chats that are never sold, shared or used to train advertising. That is what we built. Depravity is for adults 18 and over. Explicit content between consenting adults is allowed on every plan, and the limits are three lines you can read before paying: nothing involving minors, nothing non-consensual, nothing illegal. Your companion keeps its personality and remembers you between sessions. Chats are encrypted, never sold, never shared, and you can export or delete them. We enforce the three hard lines with automated and human review, and we say so.

Frequently asked questions

Is FictionLab free?

Yes, with limits. The free tier includes 32K of AI context, three models, 100 memories and 20 image credits, and the FAQ says no basic features are behind a paywall. FictionLab+ at $8.99 a month raises context to 131K and unlocks more models, memories and image credits.

How much is FictionLab+?

FictionLab's own checkout lists FictionLab+ at $8.99 a month, $23.97 every three months or $83.88 a year in the US. FictionLab Ultra costs $24.99 a month, $68.97 every three months or $251.88 a year. Subscriptions renew automatically and fees are non-refundable.

Does FictionLab allow NSFW?

Yes. FictionLab's FAQ says it "doesn't have any NSFW or other types of filters", while still requiring users to follow its Terms of Service. Those terms ban sexual content involving minors, excessive violence and anything FictionLab judges objectionable, and FictionLab can delete scenarios without giving a reason.

Is FictionLab safe?

Other users cannot read your chats, according to its FAQ. Its privacy policy does allow using your information to train its AI models, reports send parts of your chat to developers, and the minimum age is 16. Fees are non-refundable, and deleting your account ends a paid plan with no refund.

Is there a FictionLab app for iPhone?

Not yet. FictionLab has an Android app on Google Play, last updated September 28, 2026 when we checked. Its FAQ says the iOS version "is being actively developed and will come at a later date." On iPhone, you use the website.
