Poe AI Alternative for Roleplay and Adult Chat Without Compute Points

Poe is a good product for what Quora built it to be: one login and one bill for dozens of models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others. It is a poorer fit for the thing many subscribers end up using it for, which is long roleplay with a character. Every message costs points, longer memory costs more points, and whether a scene is allowed depends on which company made the bot you happen to be talking to.

Short answer

A Poe AI alternative is worth it if you use Poe for character roleplay rather than for comparing models. Poe sells plans from $4.99 a month, charges points for every message, says sending more chat history to a bot uses more points, and leaves adult content to each model maker, so Claude, GPT and Gemini bots refuse it. Depravity is one uncensored companion chat for adults at $15 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly, with no points and one written set of rules.

Below is what Poe's own help center, Usage Guidelines, Terms of Sale and privacy policy say about those three problems, and which Poe AI alternative fits which reason for leaving. If you mostly use Poe to compare models for work, we will tell you plainly that you should probably stay.

What makes it feel honest

Poe AI alternative, the way it should feel

One price, no points

Our plans are unlimited conversation. There is no per-message charge, no point balance and no add-on pack to buy when a long scene runs over.

Memory that is not metered

A companion keeps its voice and remembers you between sessions. Remembering more does not cost you more, because nothing is billed by the message.

One set of rules

Adults 18 and over only. Explicit chat between consenting adults is allowed on every plan. Nothing involving minors, non-consent or anything illegal.

Why people look for a Poe AI alternative

Poe's reviews are good. The US App Store listing averaged 4.72 stars from 53,846 ratings when we read it, and for its main job, putting the newest models from several companies behind one subscription, it is hard to beat. So the people leaving are usually not leaving because Poe is bad. They are leaving because they used it for something it was not priced or ruled for.

Three reasons come up again and again. The point balance runs down fastest in exactly the long, back-and-forth chats roleplay produces. The bot remembers less unless you pay more points to send it more history. And adult scenes are allowed or refused bot by bot, because Poe passes that decision to whoever made the model. Each of those is covered below with Poe's own words, and each points to a different alternative.

How much does a Poe subscription cost?

Poe's help center says paid plans start "at $4.99/month". The US App Store listing shows the plans sold through Apple: Basic at $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year, and Plus at $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year. The help center adds that "The most diverse subscription options are on Poe's website", so larger plans exist on the web that we could not price without an account. Roundup sites quote figures for them, but we could not match those to a page Poe shows the public, so we are not repeating them.

What a plan actually buys is compute points. The help center explains that bots "consume points to give a response", that each bot shows its own rate, and that extra points cost "$30 per 1M points". Subscription points are granted daily or monthly depending on the plan, and "Unused points do not roll over, unless specified." Free users get a daily allowance that resets every 24 hours.

One more rule catches people who switch devices. You "can only upgrade on the platform where you bought your active subscription." A plan bought in the iPhone app is managed by Apple only, so moving to one of the web-only plans means cancelling on one platform and subscribing again on another.

Why long roleplay costs more points on Poe

Because a bot only remembers what is sent to it with each message, and Poe charges for what is sent. Poe's help center describes a setting called auto-manage context that "controls how much of your chat history is sent to the bot with each new message, prioritizing recent interactions." It is on to save you points.

Turn it off and the bot can see more of the story, but Poe says plainly that this "will increase the total points used per message." That is a fair trade for a coding question. For a roleplay that has run for three hundred messages, it means choosing on every turn between a character that forgets the plot and a point balance that drains faster. Poe also lets you set a per-message budget, and it will warn you when a message would go over it.

Character platforms handle this differently. Some sell context by tier, FictionLab for example lists 32K on its free tier and 131K on FictionLab+, and some, like us, do not meter conversation at all. Either way, you are not paying again for each reply.

Does Poe allow NSFW roleplay?

Poe's own Usage Guidelines do not ban adult content between consenting adults. They ban sexual content involving minors and "violent and/or nonconsensual sexual content, whether real or simulated", then hand the rest to the model makers: third-party models "may have additional usage policies, such as restrictions on generating adult content".

In practice that means the Claude, GPT and Gemini bots most people subscribe for refuse adult scenes on Poe just as they do on their home sites, and a Plus plan does not change that. Community bots built on open models may allow more, but bot names and icons cannot be explicit, so you find them by trial and error. Trying to talk a bot past its filter is a separate breach: the Guidelines prohibit conduct that "seeks to circumvent any safety protections".

We went through Poe's rules and each provider's policy in detail in Poe AI NSFW rules and subscription price.

Who can read your chats on Poe?

More people than most users assume. Poe's privacy policy, last updated April 30, 2026, says model providers and bot developers "may receive details about your interactions with bots and apps on Poe (including the contents of your chats and photos or documents you upload)". Your username and email are not passed along.

The sentence that matters for roleplay is this one: "Developers that create bots and apps on Poe using APIs may view and store your chats on their servers to train their models." The independent bots most likely to allow adult scenes are the ones run by developers, so they are also the ones whose makers may keep what you write. Poe itself advises users to "avoid sharing sensitive personal information with the bots".

How long the bigger AI companies keep conversations is compared in how long AI companies keep your chats.

Can I get a refund from Poe?

Usually not. Poe's Terms of Sale say subscription fees "are non-refundable, other than as set forth in our Refund Policy or as determined by Quora", and purchases made through Apple or Google follow those stores' refund rules instead. Points have no cash value and cannot be refunded or transferred.

To stop the next charge, you have to cancel "on the day before your next recurring billing date" at the latest, on the same platform you subscribed on. If you are switching to an alternative, cancel first and check that the settings page shows the plan ending at the close of the billing cycle.

What Poe does better than we do

Almost everything that is not companion chat. Poe gives you current models from several companies in one place, image, video and audio bots, file uploads, group chats, an API and a free daily allowance. If you switch between models for work, one Poe plan is cheaper than three separate $20 subscriptions, and the $4.99 Basic plan is a reasonable way to try that. We do none of those things and have no free tier.

What we do instead is narrow on purpose: one uncensored AI companion chat for adults, with a single price, no points and one set of rules you can read before you pay.

Which Poe AI alternative fits you

Match the alternative to the reason you are leaving, not to whichever list ranks highest.

  • You use Poe to compare models for work. Stay on Poe, or pay one vendor directly if you have settled on a single model. No companion app replaces that.
  • You want a huge library of community characters. Janitor AI, with janitor+ at $12.99 a month, or FlowGPT if you like browsing prompt bots.
  • You want multi-character story scenarios at the lowest price. FictionLab, whose free tier is generous and whose FictionLab+ plan is $8.99 a month, though it admits users from 16.
  • You want one private companion for adult conversation, with no points, no bot-by-bot rules and an adults-only user base. That is what we built, at $15 a month or $12 a month billed yearly.

Questions about your poe ai alternative

It depends on why you use Poe. For comparing many models at work, nothing beats Poe itself. For community characters, Janitor AI. For cheap multi-character stories, FictionLab. For one private adult companion with no points and one price, Depravity at $15 a month or $12 a month billed yearly.
Poe's help center says plans start at $4.99 a month. The US App Store lists Basic at $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year and Plus at $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year. Poe says its website offers more plan options than the apps, which require an account to see.
Partly. Non-paying users get a daily allowance of compute points that resets every 24 hours and does not roll over. The newest bots and longer use need a subscription or add-on points, which Poe prices at $30 per 1M points.
No, unless your plan says otherwise. Poe's help center states that unused subscription points do not roll over, and free daily points reset every 24 hours. Add-on points bought separately are valid for one year and are not refundable.
Poe's own rules ban only sexual content involving minors and violent or nonconsensual sexual content, then defer to each model maker. Claude, GPT and Gemini bots therefore refuse adult scenes on Poe, on every plan. Some community bots allow more, but you find them by trial and error.
They can. Poe's privacy policy says developers who build bots on Poe using APIs may view and store your chats on their servers to train their models. Your username and email are not shared with them. Poe advises against sharing sensitive personal information with bots.
Poe's auto-manage context setting sends only part of your chat history with each message to save points, prioritizing recent messages. Turning it off lets the bot see more of the story, but Poe says that increases the points used per message.
Than Poe Basic, no. Basic is $4.99 a month. Than Poe Plus at $19.99, yes: Depravity is $15 a month or $12 a month billed yearly, with unlimited conversation and no points, so a long roleplay costs the same as a short one.
