AI Dungeon costs $14.99 to $99.99 a month. What each tier buys in context and Credits, why $9.99 still shows up, and who should pay for which.

An AI Dungeon subscription costs $14.99 a month for Journey, $29.99 for Legend, $49.99 for Mythic and $99.99 for Ultimate, on top of a free Wanderer tier. What the money mostly buys is context: 8k tokens on Journey, 16k on Legend and 32k on Mythic and Ultimate, plus 760 to 5,200 Credits a month for images and extra context. Most players who pay should start on Journey or Legend. Ultimate and the web-only Shadow tiers are, in AI Dungeon's own words, "NOT the right tier for most players."

We read AI Dungeon's pricing page, its Memberships and Benefits guide, its Shadow tiers FAQ and its terms (last revised April 22, 2026) on September 27, 2026, along with the in-app purchase list on its US App Store listing. Every quotation below is AI Dungeon's own. We sell a competing AI chat, so we say at the end when our product is the cheaper choice and when it is not.

Every tier can be bought month to month or for 6 or 12 months "with discounts available", and all of them auto-renew. The guide does not print the discounted 6 and 12 month prices, and the public pricing page did not show them to a logged-out reader. Journey and Legend come with a one-week trial on purchase. The terms add that the trial is one per player and that "all premium benefits will end at cancellation" if you cancel a trial early.

Text generation itself is not metered. AI Dungeon's excessive usage FAQ says it offers "unlimited AI use for all our models, no matter what tier you're on", with limits kept for suspected botting. So the tiers do not sell you more turns. They sell you more of your story in the AI's view, better models and a Credits allowance.

What context actually changes

Context is how much text AI Dungeon sends to the model each time you act: the recent adventure plus your AI Instructions, Story Summary, Plot Essentials, Author's Notes and any Story Cards that apply. The guide is direct about what happens on a small window: "the beginning of your Adventure will likely be trimmed, or Story Cards may be removed." It also puts 32k in perspective as "about 40 pages of text".

One detail catches Journey buyers. The tier is sold as "DeepSeek Models & 8k Context", but the same pricing page lists the DeepSeek models on Journey at 4k token context. The 8k applies to AI Dungeon's in-house models such as Wayfarer Small 2 and Hearthfire, while Muse gets 16k. If DeepSeek at 8k is the reason you are buying, check the model rows for Legend on the pricing page before you pay for Journey.

What AI Dungeon Credits buy

Credits are a second currency that arrives with each paid tier after payment clears. They do two jobs. Subscribers can spend "1 credit per action for a set amount of context tokens" on some models, which is the main way to go beyond your tier's window. And they pay for images: on the pricing page, SDXL Lightning is unlimited, FLUX.2 [klein] costs 3 Credits per image, FLUX.2 [pro] 15, GPT Image 2 Medium 30 and Nano Banana Pro 60. The App Store also sells top-up packs of 800 Credits for $9.99 and 1,700 Credits for $19.99.

Worked through, Journey's 760 Credits cover about 12 Nano Banana Pro images or 760 context-boosted actions. If you play long adventures daily on a model that needs the extra context, the Credits run out well before the month does, and that is the point at which Legend or Mythic becomes the cheaper route.

The Banshee, Reaper and Apocalypse shadow tiers

Above Ultimate sit three Shadow tiers, built, AI Dungeon says, for "players who were spending lots of money buying individual credit packages." Each one doubles the context of the tier below where the model allows it, so a model at 4k on Ultimate runs at 8k on Banshee, 16k on Reaper and 32k on Apocalypse. They also add a Shadow Clan, a kind of family plan with 2, 3 or 6 slots you can hand out as Journey, Legend, Mythic or Ultimate access.

The rules are strict. Shadow tiers can only be bought on the web, "only monthly plans are available", and anyone subscribed through Apple or Google must cancel that first. The public pricing page does not list Shadow prices. The only figure the FAQ gives is for the retired Wraith tier, $126, which Ultimate replaced on April 22, 2026 at $99. The FAQ's own advice is the useful part: Shadow tiers "are not the right option for the average player", and it adds that this holds for the above average player too.

Why so many sites still quote a $9.99 AI Dungeon plan

Because Apple still sells one. The US App Store's in-app purchase list, read September 27, 2026, includes AI Dungeon Champion at $14.99, AI Dungeon Adventurer at $9.99, two "Legacy AI Dungeon Adventurer" items at $9.99, Legacy AI Dungeon Traveler at $4.99, Legend at $29.99 and Mythic at $49.99. AI Dungeon's own guide says Champion was renamed Journey and that Adventurer was retired because "many of our users preferred to subscribe to Journey over Adventurer", with existing Adventurer subscribers kept on it until they change plans.

So the $9.99 tier is real for people who already have it and gone for everyone else. The same list also shows no Ultimate item, even though the Shadow FAQ says Ultimate is "able to be purchased by mobile users". Apple only displays part of an app's catalog, so treat that last point as unconfirmed rather than wrong. If price matters, subscribe on the web, where the current tiers and the Shadow options are all shown.

Is an AI Dungeon subscription worth it?

For the right player, yes. If you run long adventures with story cards, plot essentials and a world you have built up over weeks, the free 4k window will keep cutting the start of your story, and Journey at $14.99 doubles it. If you want the Ultra models, that is Legend at $29.99. Most people who play several evenings a week will be well served by one of those two. Mythic makes sense if you routinely write past 16k tokens of live story, and Ultimate is for people who were already buying Credit packs every month.

It is weaker value if what you mostly do is talk to one character. A text adventure spends its context on narration, story cards and your actions. A one-on-one chat does not need a world state, and paying $29.99 a month for 16k tokens of narrator is expensive for a conversation.

How to cancel an AI Dungeon subscription and get a refund

Cancel where you paid. The terms say a web subscription is cancelled "through the subscription settings on your account page", and that cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period, so you keep access until then. App Store subscriptions are cancelled in your Apple ID settings, and Google Play ones in the Play Store.

Refunds are narrow. The terms offer a discretionary refund to "Inactive Users", people who stopped playing but kept being billed, which "may cover charges incurred after the last month of active use", requested by email to support. Apple purchases can only be refunded by Apple, and for Google Play AI Dungeon says it "may be able to request or facilitate a refund". If adventures are failing with errors rather than getting worse, check whether the service is actually having an outage before you cancel: an independent uptime checker will tell you in seconds whether it is your plan or their servers.

AI Dungeon's 6 and 12 month discounts would lower its column, and it did not publish those figures on the pages we read, so compare against your own checkout. The bigger difference is what each plan is. AI Dungeon is a story engine with scenarios, images and multiplayer, and it allows explicit content in private play once you move its safety setting to Mature. Depravity is an uncensored AI roleplay chat for adults only, with explicit scenes between consenting adults allowed in our published rules, no Credits and no safety slider. If you want the engine, stay. If you want the character, our AI Dungeon alternative comparison lays out the trade line by line, and full plan details are on pricing.
