Grok Companions on Android: Best Alternatives

Grok Companions do not run on Android, and xAI says they never will. Its own support documentation states that Companions "are available on the iOS app only, and there are no plans to bring them to the web or Android." That is not a rollout schedule, it is a product decision in writing. If you own an Android phone or work on a laptop, no settings path, account tier or app update will get you the feature, so the only real question is what to use instead.

We checked that sentence at the source on August 31, 2026, and then went and verified which competing platforms actually ship an Android build, using Google Play package lookups rather than roundup articles. What follows is what we could confirm, what we could not, and how to pick between the options depending on what you want the companion for. Why are Grok Companions iOS only?

xAI has not published a reason, and we are not going to invent one. What the company has done is state the outcome plainly in the Grok FAQ, alongside the note that Companions are a different thing from Grok on the web and from the Grok mobile apps generally. Read together, those entries describe Companions as a deliberately narrow iOS product rather than a feature waiting on engineering time.

The practical effect is worth spelling out, because a lot of people spend money before they discover it. You can subscribe to a paid Grok plan on an Android phone, pass age verification, enable every adult setting the app offers, and still not have access to the character conversations that most articles about Grok are describing. The subscription is not broken. The feature is simply not built for your device.

That gap also explains a category of complaint you will see in forums, where somebody insists the feature was removed. Usually it was never there for them. A related cause is Grok's newer weekly usage pool, which is shared across chat, image generation, voice and coding: when the weekly allowance is spent, xAI documents that paid features pause until it resets. A paused feature and a missing feature look identical from the outside.

Which AI companion apps actually have an Android app?

We looked up each package on Google Play from a US session on August 31, 2026 and recorded only what returned a live listing. Where we could not confirm a package identifier, we have left the row blank rather than guess, because a failed lookup on an identifier we invented proves nothing at all.

Two things in that table matter more than the yes and no column. The first is that Character.AI has the strongest Android distribution of anything here and also the strictest content rules, since it prohibits sexually explicit content for every user including verified adults. Easy to install is not the same as permissive, and if you are shopping on the basis of what you are allowed to say, that distinction decides the whole question. The second is SpicyChat, which is the clearest illustration of how fragile app distribution is in this category. Its documentation states that the iOS app "has been removed from the App Store" because Apple "determined that the app does not comply with their guidelines," and that installed copies stopped working after September 25, 2025. Android users get an official build, but by direct download from the company site rather than through Google Play. Can you use Grok Companions in a desktop browser?

No. The same sentence in the xAI FAQ rules out the web at the same time as Android, which makes Grok an awkward choice for anyone who does most of their typing on a laptop. Grok Chat itself works fine in a browser at grok.com. Companions do not.

This is where a browser-based product has a structural advantage that has nothing to do with how good the underlying model is. A web app has one surface, so there is no version gap between your phone and your desktop, no waiting for a store review before a fix reaches you, and no possibility that a platform decision removes your access to something you paid for. It is the same reason SpicyChat now tells its own iOS users to switch to the website: when the store took the app away, the web version was the thing that survived.

The tradeoff is honest and worth stating. You give up a home screen icon that behaves like a native app, push notifications work less reliably, and you cannot pay through an app store if that is what you prefer. Adding the site to your home screen closes most of the experience gap, but not all of it.

What should Android users pick instead?

It depends entirely on what you want the companion to do, and the honest recommendations split three ways.

• You want a huge public character library and do not need adult content. Character.AI, on Google Play, is the strongest option and it is free. We say that plainly even though it competes with us.
• You want a long-running relationship with one character that remembers you. Replika and Nomi are built around that, and Replika has a verified Play listing. Note that Replika limits romantic and erotic roleplay to accounts created before February 1, 2023.

Whichever you choose, the buying advice is the same: check the surface before you check the feature list. A capability that only exists on a device you do not own is worth nothing to you, and a subscription bought on the assumption that it will arrive on Android eventually is a subscription bought on an assumption the vendor has already contradicted in writing.

Is it worth waiting for Grok Companions on Android?

Based on what xAI has published, no. Companies change their minds, and if Companions arrive on Android next year we will update this page and say so. But the difference between "not yet" and "no plans" is the difference between a queue and a closed door, and xAI wrote the second one. Planning around a reversal it has not hinted at is not a plan.

If you are the sort of person who wants to know the moment a service you depend on changes state, it is worth putting the tools you actually rely on behind something that tells you when a site or API stops responding, rather than finding out from a forum thread three days later. Availability in this category moves quickly and quietly, as the SpicyChat timeline shows.

What we could not verify

We could not confirm Google Play listings for several platforms because we could not establish their package identifiers from a source we trust, and guessing one and receiving a not-found response would tell you nothing. So PolyBuzz, Chai, Nomi, Kindroid, Chub AI and Janitor AI are absent from the table above rather than marked as unavailable. Absence from our table means we did not check successfully, not that the app does not exist.

We also deliberately publish no price for the Grok tier that unlocks adult settings. The figures circulating in third-party guides contradict each other, xAI does not state the number on a page our tools can retrieve, and a confidently wrong price is worse than an admitted gap.
