The best Sakura AI alternative depends on what you are paying Sakura for. If it is unlimited adult roleplay with one character who remembers you, Depravity costs $15 a month or $12 billed yearly, allows explicit content between consenting adults in its own rules, and has a privacy policy that says your chats are never sold. If it is Sakura's huge library of community characters, SpicyChat ($5.95 to $29.95 a month) or Janitor AI (free, or $12.99 for janitor+) are closer swaps. Sakura itself charges $19 a month for Diamond and $39 for Infinite, and its privacy policy says it "may sell" personal information.
We read Sakura's pricing page, Terms of Service, privacy policy and its US App Store and Google Play listings on September 29, 2026. The SpicyChat and Janitor figures come from their own plan pages and terms, read September 17 and September 10, 2026. Every quotation is the vendor's own. We make one of the products compared here, so weigh our view accordingly; where a competitor is the better buy, we say so.
Why people look for a Sakura AI alternative
Sakura is still running. The site loads, its Discord server had about 214,000 members when we checked, and its homepage is full of adult roleplay characters with millions of chats each. What pushes paying users to shop around is less about the product and more about the paperwork around it.
The iOS app was last updated on May 23, 2024, with the note "Small fixes". The Android app last changed in December 2024. The Terms of Service and the privacy policy both still read "Last updated: January 06, 2024", and the company blog returned a server error on the day we looked. There is no help center; the support page sends you to a Discord channel. None of that means Sakura is shutting down, and we found no notice saying so. It does mean the documents you are agreeing to when you pay have not been touched in almost three years, while the product and its prices have changed.
The other common reason is memory. Sakura's own pricing page sells longer memory as the upgrade: Diamond adds "Better memory", and "Infinite Memory" is reserved for the $39 tier. If your character keeps forgetting the scene on the free plan, you are being asked to pay to fix it, and it is reasonable to compare what that money buys elsewhere.
How much does Sakura AI cost?
Sakura calls its subscription Sakura+. The pricing page shows two tiers, both tagged "SALE", with a monthly and a yearly toggle that promises "Save 40%". The App Store lists a third, cheaper tier that the website does not show.
| Tier | Monthly | Yearly | What Sakura says it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | A daily message limit. The number is not published anywhere we could read. Extra free messages ("Sakura Sage") are offered for promoting Sakura on social media |
| Gold | $5.00 (App Store only) | Not listed | Not described on any page we could read |
| Diamond | $19 | $132 ($11 a month) | "Unlimited Messages", the "Dragonfruit Model" with "Better memory", and "Fusion Mode" for several replies per message |
| Infinite | $39 | $275 ($23 a month) | "Glowing Dragonfruit Model" with images, "Infinite Memory", everything in Diamond |
The App Store prices match the website: Diamond $19.00 a month or $131.99 a year, Infinite $39.00 or $274.99. Payment on the web runs through a third-party processor or PayPal. Sakura does not say which AI model sits behind "Dragonfruit".
Does Sakura AI allow NSFW?
Yes, as an opt-in. The settings have a switch labeled "Show NSFW (18+)", there are NSFW style presets such as "Slow Build Up" and "Dominant", and creators of adult characters tick a box saying "I am 18 years or older and I understand the potential legal consequences for violating these rules." That checkbox is the whole age check. We found no ID or face verification.
Sakura runs what it calls an "AutoModeration system, an automated process powered by AI" that can flag messages and edit characters. Its content notice bans "mature content involving minors, sexual assault, slavery, biological incest, bestiality, racism, or hate speech."
Two things in Sakura's own documents do not line up, and you should know both before paying. The Terms of Service forbid content that is "obscene or otherwise objectionable", which sits oddly next to a product that switches NSFW on. And the terms say "You represent that you are over the age of 18," while the privacy policy says the service "does not address anyone under the age of 13", a 13+ standard. A company can fix that in an afternoon. After almost three years, it has not.
What Sakura's privacy policy says about your chats
Very little about chats specifically, which is the problem. The privacy policy is a general template from January 2024. It does not mention AI, model training, chat logs or whether a person ever reads your conversations. It keeps data "only for as long as is necessary", without a period.
What it does say plainly is this: service providers may use your information "for activities such as advertising, marketing, and analytics, and these may be deemed a sale under CCPA/CPRA," and "We may sell and may have sold in the last twelve (12) months" categories of personal information. Apple's privacy label for the app lists contact info, user content and identifiers as data linked to you, used among other things for the developer's advertising or marketing.
For an adult roleplay app, that is the sentence to weigh. Our own privacy policy says the opposite: chats are encrypted, never sold, never shared and never used to train advertising, and you can export or delete them. We also say that automated and human review enforce our three hard lines, because pretending nobody ever looks would be dishonest.
Refunds and cancelling Sakura+
Sakura's terms say subscriptions renew "automatically" at the end of each period "unless You cancel it", that paid fees "are non-refundable" except where the law requires otherwise or Sakura grants one "at the sole discretion of the Company", and that it may change prices "in its sole discretion and at any time." If you cancel, you keep access to the end of the period you paid for. App Store purchases follow Apple's refund rules instead.
So if you are switching, cancel before the renewal date rather than after, and do not count on getting a partial month back.

What Sakura does better than we do
A few things, and they are real. Sakura's library of community-made characters is enormous, with individual bots past nine million chats, and we do not have a public character marketplace at all. Fusion Mode, which gives you several replies to pick from on every message, is a nice feature for roleplayers who like to steer. The Infinite tier generates images; we do not make images. And Diamond billed yearly works out to $11 a month, a dollar cheaper than our Open plan billed yearly.
If browsing thousands of user-made characters is the part you love, stay on a library site. Sakura, SpicyChat or Janitor will serve you better than we will.
Who should switch, and to what
You mostly talk to one or two characters. Then you are paying Sakura for memory and message limits, not for the library. A companion built for long adult conversations fits better. That is what Depravity is: an uncensored AI roleplay chat for US adults 18 and over, where every plan is unlimited chat and the character keeps its voice and history across sessions.
You care where your chats end up. Sakura's privacy policy says it may sell personal information and says nothing about training on chats. Ours says chats are never sold, never shared and never used to train advertising. That difference alone is worth $15 to a lot of people.
You build characters and have an audience. Some of Sakura's most popular creators have characters with millions of chats. If that is you and you would like to get paid for the audience you have built, look at brands that sponsor creators directly rather than waiting for a platform to share revenue. For your own roleplay, the choice above still applies.
You want the biggest free library. Stay where you are or try Janitor AI. We are not the cheap option, and we do not pretend to be.
Frequently asked questions
Is Sakura AI free?
Partly. Sakura has a free plan with a daily message limit, but it does not publish the number. Unlimited messages start with Sakura+ Diamond at $19 a month, or $132 a year. You can also earn extra free messages through Sakura's "Sage" program by promoting it on social media.
Does Sakura AI have a filter?
Sakura's NSFW content is behind an opt-in "Show NSFW (18+)" switch, and an AI moderation system can flag messages and edit characters. Its content notice bans content involving minors, sexual assault, slavery, incest, bestiality, racism and hate speech. Age is confirmed only by a checkbox.
Is Sakura AI safe?
It depends on what you are worried about. Sakura's privacy policy, unchanged since January 2024, says it may sell personal information and allows sharing for advertising and marketing, and it says nothing about how chats are stored or used for training. Its terms and privacy policy also disagree on the minimum age, 18 versus 13.
Is Sakura AI shutting down?
We found no shutdown notice. The site was live on September 29, 2026 and its Discord server had about 214,000 members. The apps have not been updated since 2024, and the terms and privacy policy date from January 2024, which is why some users are looking for alternatives.
What is the best Sakura AI alternative for NSFW roleplay?
For one-on-one adult roleplay with a character that remembers you, Depravity allows explicit content between consenting adults in its own rules, from $12 a month billed yearly. For a large community character library like Sakura's, SpicyChat is the closest match, and Janitor AI is the main free option.
Try it before you cancel anything
Use the chat at the top of this page. Start the scene you were playing on Sakura, in plain words, and see how it answers. If it is what you wanted, plans start at $12 a month billed yearly, and every limit is printed on the pricing page.
