Who do you want to talk to?
You can change who you talk to anytime.
18+ · Private and anonymous · No minors, non-consent, or anything illegal.
There is no single best AI character chat app for adults, because the category splits into two products that get reviewed as if they were one. Public-library platforms like Character.AI, Janitor AI and Chub AI give you millions of user-made characters and publish what you create. Private-companion platforms give you a small crafted set, nothing to browse, and nothing published. Pick the wrong half and the app everyone recommends will feel wrong to you.
Most roundups in this space rank these tools on a feature grid and skip the structural question entirely. This one starts with it, names the apps that beat us at specific jobs, and shows what we could and could not verify first-hand in August 2026. If you want the full breakdown of who can see and copy the characters you build, that lives on our AI chat characters page.
Which AI character chat app is best for adults?
It depends on the job. Here is the honest map, with the winner named for each use case even where it is not us.
| If you want this | Pick | Why | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| The widest choice of characters | Character.AI or Janitor AI | Millions of user-made characters between them, free to browse, a new one every day. Nothing we offer competes on breadth. | Character.AI prohibits sexually explicit content platform-wide, including for verified adults. Breadth and adult freedom do not come together here. |
| Adult conversation that does not break scene | A dedicated uncensored platform | Several permit adult chat between adults. Depravity is built specifically for it, with persistent memory and firm legal lines. | The good ones are mostly paid. We have no free tier at all. |
| Building and publishing your own characters | Chub AI or Janitor AI | Full character builders, portable card formats, and an audience that will actually use what you make. | Published means published. Check the visibility setting before, not after. |
| Maximum control over one companion | Kindroid | Dozens of per-companion settings, voice, group chats. The deepest customization in the category. | We could not read its terms of service. kindroid.ai/terms-of-service returned a 404 on our check. |
| Running everything yourself | SillyTavern | Free, AGPL-3.0, character cards are files on your own machine. Nothing leaves your computer unless you send it. | It is an interface only. You supply the model, the hardware and the setup time. |
| Nothing you write ever being listed or copyable | A private-companion platform | No library means no listing, no search index and no remix button. Depravity works this way by design. | No builder either. If designing characters is the hobby, this is the wrong half of the category. |
| Free access above everything else | Character.AI, Janitor AI or SpicyChat | All genuinely free to use. If cost is the binding constraint, one of these is your answer and we are not. | Free is funded somehow. On several platforms that funding is your conversation data. |
Best for variety: the public character libraries
Character.AI is the biggest name in AI character chat and the wrong destination if content freedom is why you are shopping. It prohibits sexually explicit content across the entire platform, for every user, verified adults included. No setting unlocks it. What it does have is scale, polish and a library nobody else can match, and for a great many people that is the right trade.
Janitor AI and Chub AI both allow adult roleplay and both run large community libraries. Janitor AI is free with a paid janitor+ tier at $12.99 a month as of June 2026. Chub AI runs on crypto subscriptions with roughly 20 messages a day on the free tier. If you are leaving Character.AI specifically over the filter, these are the closest like-for-like moves, and our Character AI alternative comparison goes through the trade-offs in detail.
Best for adult content: what actually permits it
Permission and age checking are two different questions, and conflating them is the most common error in coverage of this category. Character.AI runs the strictest age assurance of any platform here and still bans adult content for everyone. Talkie and Dopple AI prohibit explicit material outright. Nomi, Kindroid, SpicyChat, Chub and Janitor permit adult roleplay to varying degrees.
Depravity sits firmly on the permitting side, with limits that are stated rather than discovered. Uncensored here means free of corporate filters, lectures and moral commentary. It does not mean free of law: nothing involving minors, non-consent or anything illegal is available at any price, on any plan. Those lines are exactly why the rest of the conversation can stay open. We break the permission question down platform by platform on our adult AI chat page, and cover which mainstream assistants refuse what in which AI has no filter.
Best for building your own characters
If writing character definitions is the part you enjoy, you want a public-library platform and you want it for the audience as much as the builder. Chub AI is built around portable character cards. Janitor AI has a very large public directory. Character.AI has the deepest tooling and the biggest audience, with the tightest content rules.
The craft is mostly in the definition rather than the settings. A character that feels alive usually has three or four specific contradictions in it, a way of speaking you could recognize blindfolded, and something it wants that it will not say directly. Writers who get stuck on that stage often find it easier to generate a spread of personality angles first and then cut, rather than trying to invent a whole person in one pass. Depravity has no builder, so on this specific job the platforms above beat us outright.
Best for privacy, and what you cannot check before signing up
This is where the category is weakest, and we can show you rather than tell you. In August 2026 we requested the homepages of eight AI character chat platforms directly and measured how much readable text each returned without running JavaScript. Five answered with a 200. Of those five, four rendered under 150 characters of text: Chub AI returned 7 characters, Talkie 79, SpicyChat 86 and Kindroid 141. Only Nomi.ai served a genuinely readable page. Three more (Character.AI, Janitor AI and CrushOn) returned a 403, which is a bot block rather than evidence of anything.
Not one of the eight showed a price anywhere in the delivered HTML. The same pattern holds for legal documents: when we went looking for terms of service, several served pages that render nothing without JavaScript, and the Internet Archive holds the same empty shells. You cannot read what you are agreeing to without running the application first.
Where policies are readable, they differ sharply. Chai says in its own privacy notice that it uses data derived from in-app conversations to fine tune its models, and that data may be kept up to five years after account deletion. CrushOn reserves the right to train on content from character chats. Dopple AI takes a license over user content described as perpetual and irrevocable, extending to displaying targeted advertisements. Plenty of others say nothing about training at all, which is not a denial. It is simply the absence of any commitment you could hold them to.
Ours states it plainly: encrypted, never sold, never shared, never used to train advertising, and yours to export or delete. It also discloses that automated and human review exist to enforce the hard lines, because a policy claiming nobody ever looks would not be true. Apply the same scepticism to us that you would to anyone else on this page, and read it before you type anything sensitive.
How much do AI character chat apps cost?
Published subscriptions cluster between roughly $10 and $30 a month. Character.AI has run c.ai+ at around $9.99, Janitor AI introduced janitor+ at $12.99 in June 2026, and Depravity starts at $15 a month or $12 billed yearly. What varies far more than the headline figure is what it buys: some plans meter messages, some drain compute credits, some gate memory depth or which model you get. A cheap plan with a credit meter you exhaust in a week costs more in practice than a flat one you never think about. We opened every pricing page we could find by hand in our breakdown of adult AI chat pricing, and most of the category publishes no price at all.
How to choose in about five minutes
Answer three questions in order and the field narrows fast. First: do you want a catalogue to browse or a companion to know? That decides which half of the category you are shopping in and eliminates most of the list immediately. Second: does the platform permit the conversations you actually want, stated in writing rather than inferred from a review? Third: what does it say it does with your chats, and can you read that before you sign up?
Then test memory before you pay for a year. Have a real conversation, come back two days later, and see whether the character remembers who you are. Memory is the feature that decides whether you keep using a companion or abandon it after a fortnight, and it is the one almost no roundup checks. Our AI roleplay chat page covers what to look for when a character starts losing the thread.
If the private-companion half is what you want, you can start a conversation with one of ours at the top of this page and see how it holds up. Depravity is for US adults 18 and over, paid only, from $15 a month.
