Perplexity does not allow NSFW content, and no Perplexity plan changes that. Its Terms of Service (last updated January 23, 2026) forbid content that is "obscene" or "pornographic" in section 5.2(k), and its Acceptable Use Policy bans "pornographic or exploitative content" and any attempt to "circumvent abuse protections or safety filters, whether Perplexity's or those of a third party". Pro at $20 a month and Max at $200 buy more searches and models, not an exception. If adult conversation is what you want to pay for, buy a product whose own rules allow it: Depravity is $15 a month, or $12 billed yearly.
perplexity.ai answers automated readers with a security check, so on October 1, 2026 we read its Terms of Service from the Internet Archive's capture of September 30, 2026 and its Acceptable Use Policy from the most recent capture, dated August 9, 2026, along with the US App Store listing for the Perplexity app, version 26.38.0. Prices for the other tools come from their own pricing pages and App Store listings, read between September 21 and October 1, 2026. We make one of the products compared here, so weigh our view with that in mind. Where a competitor is the better buy, we say so.
Does Perplexity allow NSFW content?
No. Section 5.2 of the Terms lists what you may not do with the service, and item (k) is blunt: you may not "submit, transmit, display, perform, post or store any content that is unlawful, defamatory, obscene, excessively violent, pornographic", or "otherwise use the Services in a manner that is obscene" or "pornographic". That covers both what you type in and what you ask it to produce.
The Acceptable Use Policy, last updated July 8, 2025 and incorporated into the Terms, repeats the point under a heading called "Avoid high-risk activity". Among its examples of things you may not use Perplexity to do: "Create, compile or distribute ... pornographic or exploitative content". There is no carve-out for fiction, roleplay or private threads, and no adult setting in the app or on the web.
What the rules do not ban is discussing sex as a subject. Perplexity will search and summarize sexual health information, explain a news story or cite research, because that is information retrieval rather than explicit content. The line people hit is the moment a request becomes an erotic scene or a sexual chat.
Does Perplexity Pro or Max unlock NSFW?
No. The US App Store purchase list for Perplexity, read October 1, 2026, shows Perplexity Pro at $20.00 (listed three times), a $200.00 Pro item that matches ten months of the monthly price and looks like the annual plan, Perplexity Max at $200.00, and credit packs from 500 credits at $5 to 5,000 at $50. Every one of those is sold on volume: more Pro searches, more research, access to more models. None is described as changing the content rules, and the Terms apply to every account the same way.
Two more lines from the Terms are worth knowing before you subscribe for any reason. Section 2.3 says subscriptions "automatically renew ... at the then-current rates". Section 2.4 is titled "No Subscription Refunds" and says payments "are nonrefundable and there are no credits for partially used periods", except where a country-specific page says otherwise. A month bought to test whether something works is a month you keep paying for.
Does picking Claude, GPT or Grok inside Perplexity change the rules?
No, and it adds a second rulebook rather than removing one. Perplexity's Terms say your use of its engine and its outputs "may also be subject to license and use restrictions set forth in a third-party LLM license". The Acceptable Use Policy then forbids you to "jailbreak" the service or to circumvent safety filters "whether Perplexity's or those of a third party", and it names "the third-party AI models used in the Services" explicitly.
So choosing a different model in the picker does not move you to a looser contract. You stay under Perplexity's ban on pornographic content, and you add the policy of the company that trained the model. Anthropic's Usage Policy, for one, bans "erotic chats" and says it applies "including via any authorized resellers or passthrough access", which we quoted in full in our Claude NSFW breakdown. OpenAI's rule against erotica sits at the top level of its Model Spec, as our ChatGPT NSFW page shows. Grok has the loosest reputation of the three, but xAI deleted its own NSFW help entry in September 2026, and Grok through Perplexity is still Perplexity.
Can you get banned from Perplexity for NSFW?
Yes. Section 11.3 of the Terms says that if you breach them, your licenses "terminate automatically", and that Perplexity "may suspend, disable, or delete your Account and/or the Services ... with or without notice, for any or no reason". If it deletes an account for a suspected breach, you are barred from opening another one without permission.
Put that next to the refund clause and the risk is lopsided. You can lose the account, the saved threads and the paid time left on the plan, and the Terms promise no money back. For someone who uses Perplexity for work research, that is a lot to stake on a roleplay that the rules prohibit anyway.
What about the videos that show how to enable NSFW on Perplexity?
They describe prompt tricks, and the Acceptable Use Policy bans exactly that. Its "Avoid technical misuse" section prohibits attempts to "jailbreak", to use "prompt injection or other adversarial attacks", or to "circumvent abuse protections or safety filters". A trick that works today is a breach of contract that also happens to work today, and a model update can end it without notice.
The other source of confusion is R1 1776, an open-weight model Perplexity released in 2025 and described as uncensored. The "uncensored" label there referred to political topics the original DeepSeek model avoided, not to adult content, and running downloadable weights on your own hardware is a separate thing from the Perplexity app and its Terms. Searching "perplexity uncensored" and finding that model does not mean the app behaves differently.
Perplexity NSFW alternatives compared
| Tool | US price | Adult content, per the vendor's own documents | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | Pro $20 a month; Max $200 | Terms 5.2(k) and the Acceptable Use Policy ban pornographic content and bypassing third-party model filters | Cited web research |
| Claude | Pro $20 a month or $17 billed yearly; Max from $100 | Usage Policy bans sex acts, fetish content and "erotic chats", including through resellers | Writing, code and long documents |
| Gemini | AI Pro $19.99; Ultra from $99.99 | Prohibited Use Policy bans content made "for the purpose of pornography or sexual gratification" | Google Workspace users |
| SuperGrok | $30 a month; Lite $10; Plus $100 | No xAI plan page mentions adult content; its NSFW help entry was removed in September 2026 | An all-round assistant with image and video |
| NovelAI | $10, $15 or $25 a month | Its terms contain no clause on sexual content either way | Long-form fiction drafting |
| Depravity | $15 a month or $12 billed yearly | Explicit conversation between consenting adults is allowed in writing; nothing involving minors, non-consent or illegal acts | Private adult conversation and roleplay |
The pattern is the same across the big general assistants. Each one sells capacity, and none sells an adult exception. Our SuperGrok NSFW price breakdown shows how far people get into a $30 plan before discovering the vendor never promised the thing they bought it for.
Who should pay for what
If you want adult fiction drafted into a manuscript, NovelAI is built around that workflow and is the better fit. If you want a private, ongoing conversation or roleplay where explicit content is allowed in the terms rather than squeezed past a filter, that is what Depravity is for: uncensored text chat for US adults 18 and over, in any browser, with companions that keep memory between sessions and chats you can export or delete.
Either way, the buying test is simple. Read the vendor's own content rules before you pay, not a video about getting around them. A product that allows what you want in writing cannot take it away by changing a filter, because it would have to change its terms first.
Where Perplexity is still the better buy
For research, Perplexity does something we do not attempt. It searches the live web, cites its sources line by line, compares documents and runs deep research reports. If your work ends in a deck for a client or a manager, pairing it with a tool that turns a research report into a slide deck saves another afternoon. Nothing on our side replaces any of that.
Many people will reasonably keep Perplexity Pro for work and add a separate, smaller subscription for the conversation it will not have. Our plans start at $12 a month billed yearly, which is less than the Pro plan alone, and the limits are printed on the pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
Does Perplexity allow NSFW?
No. Perplexity's Terms of Service bar content that is obscene or pornographic in section 5.2(k), and its Acceptable Use Policy bans creating "pornographic or exploitative content". The rules apply to every plan and every model you can choose inside the app. Discussing sexual health or news as information is fine.
Is Perplexity uncensored?
Not for adult content. The open-weight R1 1776 model Perplexity released in 2025 was called uncensored because it answers political questions the original DeepSeek model avoided. The Perplexity app itself runs under Terms that ban pornographic content and any attempt to bypass safety filters.
Can you get banned from Perplexity for NSFW prompts?
Yes. Section 11.3 of the Terms lets Perplexity suspend or delete your account "with or without notice, for any or no reason", and an account deleted for a suspected breach cannot simply be recreated. Subscriptions are nonrefundable under section 2.4, so paid time is lost too.
What is the best Perplexity alternative for adult chat?
A product whose own rules allow it. Depravity allows explicit conversation between consenting adults, has unlimited chat on every plan and costs $15 a month or $12 billed yearly. For drafting adult fiction as a manuscript, NovelAI is the closer fit. For more options, see our best uncensored AI comparison.
Try the conversation Perplexity will not have
Use the chat at the top of this page. Ask it the thing Perplexity declined, in plain words, and see what comes back. If it is what you were after, plans start at $12 a month billed yearly and every limit is on the pricing page.
