Claude NSFW Rules and a Paid Alternative

Claude does not allow NSFW content, and a paid plan does not change that. Anthropic's Usage Policy, effective September 15, 2025, has a section titled "Do Not Generate Sexually Explicit Content" that bans depicting sex acts, sexual fantasies and "erotic chats", and it applies to the API and to every reseller or passthrough app, not just claude.ai. If you want adult writing or roleplay that is allowed in writing, the choice is between tools built for it: Depravity for conversation and roleplay from $15 a month or $12 billed yearly, Sudowrite's Muse model or NovelAI for manuscripts.

We read Anthropic's Usage Policy and Claude's pricing page on September 28, 2026, along with Google's Gemini policies the same day. Does Claude allow NSFW content?

No. The policy is unusually specific about it. Under "Do Not Generate Sexually Explicit Content", Anthropic lists four things you may not use its products or services to do:

• "Depict or request sexual intercourse or sex acts"
• "Generate content related to sexual fetishes or fantasies"
• "Facilitate, promote, or depict incest or bestiality"
• "Engage in erotic chats"

That last line is the one most guides skip, and it is the one that matters for roleplay. The ban is not only on explicit prose. It covers an erotic conversation as an activity, which rules out the companion-style use that most people searching for Claude NSFW have in mind.

Read the list closely and you can also see what is not on it. It does not ban romance, attraction, relationships or talking about sex as a subject. That is why Claude will help with a love story, explain sexual health or discuss a novel's themes, and then decline once a scene turns explicit. The line people keep hitting is the one Anthropic drew on purpose.

Can Claude write NSFW through the API or a third-party app?

Not within the rules. The first paragraph of the Usage Policy says it "applies to anyone who can submit inputs to Anthropic's products and/or services, including via any authorized resellers or passthrough access." In plain terms, a chat frontend, a roleplay app or a model router that sends your messages to Claude puts you under the same policy as claude.ai. Changing the window you type into does not change the contract behind it. The same goes for apps that let you pick Claude from a model menu: Perplexity, for one, adds its own ban on pornographic content on top, as our Perplexity NSFW breakdown shows.

The enforcement terms are written down too. Anthropic says its Safeguards Team "will implement detection and monitoring to enforce our Usage Policy" and that if it learns of a violation, "we may throttle, suspend, or terminate your access to our products and services." Jailbreaks do not help here either: the same policy separately prohibits intentionally bypassing "capabilities, restrictions, or guardrails established within our products", and names jailbreaking as its example.

Google is the useful contrast. In the Gemini API the adjustable safety filter for sexual content is off by default for Gemini 2.5 and 3 models, yet Google's Prohibited Use Policy still bans content made "for the purpose of pornography or sexual gratification", and its usage policy says automated systems scan for it. Does Claude Pro or Max unlock adult content?

No. On September 28, 2026 Claude's pricing page listed Free, Pro at $17 a month billed yearly ($200 up front) or $20 month to month, and Max from $100 a month for 5x or 20x the usage of Pro. Team seats run $20 to $25. Every tier is sold on usage and features. The Usage Policy sits above all of them and has no tier-based exception.

The same is true across the big assistants. OpenAI's Model Spec puts its erotica rule above anything a user or developer can override, which we traced across five dated versions on our ChatGPT NSFW page. Google's AI Pro and Ultra plans raise limits and change none of the content rules. A subscription to a general assistant buys capacity, never an exception. Microsoft goes furthest: a Copilot breach can cost the whole Microsoft account, email and OneDrive included, as our Copilot NSFW breakdown shows. Which alternative to Claude should you pay for?

Start from why you opened Claude in the first place. Most people who search for Claude NSFW fall into one of three groups, and each is better served by a different product.

You were writing a book. Claude is a strong prose partner, and losing it at the explicit chapter is frustrating. Where Claude is still the better buy

For nearly everything that is not adult content, Claude is a better product than ours, and it would be dishonest to suggest otherwise. It writes and reviews code, reads long documents, researches, drafts business writing, and plugs into your tools. We do none of that. Plenty of people will reasonably keep a Claude Pro plan for work and add a separate, smaller subscription for the conversation Claude will not have.

The honest comparison is between what each product is for. Claude is for work. Depravity is for private adult conversation, with published limits and chats you can export or delete. Paying for both costs less than Claude Max alone.
