AI Voice Chat: Voice Chat AI and an AI Voice Chatbot That Talks Back

Typing is fine until it isn't. Some conversations only work out loud, at the pace you actually speak, and that is where most AI chat falls apart: either there is no voice at all, or the voice is bolted onto a product that still refuses half of what you want to say.

Short answer

AI voice chat covers two genuinely different things that get sold under the same name. The first is playback: the model writes a reply as text and a text-to-speech engine reads it aloud, so you are still typing. The second is a two-way call, where you speak and it answers in something close to real time. Character.AI has offered free two-way Character Calls since June 2024 and beats us outright on price, but it prohibits explicit content for every user including verified adults. SpicyChat documents playback only, and locks it plus voice cloning behind its top tier. Chub AI and Moescape document no voice feature at all. Depravity sits at the other end of that trade: voice notes from $29 a month, real calls at $59, uncensored for US adults 18 and over, and no public catalogue your voice ever ends up in.

This page sorts out what the AI voice chat market actually offers, taken from the platforms' own documentation rather than from a roundup. We read the Character.AI announcement, the SpicyChat product docs, the Chub AI docs and the Moescape docs first-hand in August 2026, and we say plainly where each of them beats us.

What makes it feel honest

AI voice chat, the way it should feel

Voice notes, then real calls

Send a voice note and get one back on the Unfiltered plan. Step up to Boundless and you can hold an actual call.

The filter does not follow

Speaking out loud does not put you into a stricter mode here. The hard lines are the same ones the text chat has.

Nobody else hears it

There is no public character library, so the voice you set is never handed to strangers along with your companion.

What each AI chat platform actually documents about voice, read first-hand in August 2026

Platform Voice documented? Playback or two-way call What it costs Documented limits
Character.AI Yes, in its own announcement, though not anywhere in its 44 page Character Guide. Two-way. Its announcement calls it "a seamless two-way voice conversation" and says you can "interrupt with the tap of a button". Free. It states Character Calls is "available to the general public on our app or web completely free of charge". No published call length. Explicit content is prohibited across the whole platform, in voice as well as text.
SpicyChat Yes, in unusual detail, across a Text-to-Speech page and a Custom Voices page. Playback only. You press Play under a message and the reply is read back. Narration Mode also reads action text, for an audiobook effect. Top tier only. Its docs say text-to-speech is "exclusively for I'm All In subscribers". Voice cloning is capped hard: MP3 or WAV, 5 to 30 seconds per clip, up to 3 clips, under 4 MB total, and a maximum of 20 custom voices per account.
Chub AI No. There is no voice or audio page anywhere in its documentation index. Not documented. Not documented. Its docs are otherwise detailed, so the silence is worth noticing rather than assuming.
Moescape (formerly Yodayo) No. Its documentation index lists no voice or audio page. Not documented. Not documented. It does publish context limits of 8,192 tokens on most Tavern models, but nothing about voice.
Janitor AI Could not verify. janitorai.com/terms returned a 404 when we requested it in August 2026. Could not verify. Could not verify. You supply model access yourself, so anything voice related depends on what you connect.
Depravity Yes, on our pricing page. Both, split by plan. Voice notes back and forth on Unfiltered, and actual voice calls on Boundless. Voice notes from $29 a month. Voice calls on the $59 plan. No free tier. We do not publish a call length or a token figure. Candid adult conversation is allowed for US adults 18 and over, within firm lines on minors, non-consent and anything illegal.

The honest pattern in that table is a trade, and it runs in one direction. The platform that gives you two-way voice for nothing is also the platform that filters hardest, for everyone, verified adults included. The platforms that let you say more either document no voice at all or put it behind their most expensive plan. If your only requirement is talking to an AI out loud and you do not mind the guardrails, Character.AI is free and you should use it rather than pay us. We are the better fit only when the filter is the thing that keeps ruining the conversation.

What is AI voice chat?

AI voice chat is any setup where you hear an AI reply out loud instead of only reading it. In practice it splits into two very different products. Playback, or text-to-speech, means the model still writes text and a separate voice engine reads it back. A two-way call means you speak, it listens, and it answers in near real time.

That distinction decides whether the feature is worth paying for. Playback is pleasant and it is what most platforms actually ship, but you are still typing every message, so it changes how the reply arrives rather than how you talk. A real call changes the interaction: you think out loud, you interrupt, you trail off and get picked up. Marketing copy tends to blur the two, so it is worth checking which one you are buying.

A third thing sometimes gets folded in under the same heading, which is voice cloning: uploading a recording so the character speaks in a specific voice. SpicyChat is the only platform in this comparison that documents it, and it publishes real numbers, which is rarer than it sounds.

  • Playback: the reply is written, then read aloud. You still type.
  • Two-way call: you speak, it answers, and you can cut in.
  • Voice cloning: you supply audio and the character adopts that voice.

Can I talk to an AI with my voice?

Yes, and on several platforms it costs nothing. Character.AI has offered two-way Character Calls since June 27, 2024, free on both app and web, in English plus Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese and Chinese among others. If the only thing you want is to speak to an AI out loud, that is the shortest path and we will not pretend otherwise.

What you give up on the free options is subject matter. Character.AI prohibits explicit content across the entire service, and that ban applies to verified adults exactly as it applies to everyone else. So the question is rarely whether you can talk to an AI with your voice. It is whether the conversation you actually wanted to have survives contact with the content policy.

On Depravity you speak to a companion you shaped yourself. The Unfiltered plan at $29 a month carries voice notes in both directions, so you can talk something through out loud and get a spoken answer back. The Boundless plan at $59 carries live voice calls. There is no free tier here, which is a genuine disadvantage against the free options and we would rather state it than bury it.

Which AI chatbot has voice, and what kind?

Fewer than the marketing suggests, and the ones that do are split almost evenly between playback and real calls. Character.AI documents two-way calling. SpicyChat documents playback with voice cloning on top. Chub AI and Moescape, both of which publish otherwise thorough product documentation, list no voice page at all.

That last point deserves care. A missing documentation page is not proof a feature does not exist, and we are not claiming it is. What it does mean is that there is no published commitment you could hold the company to, and no stated limits you could plan around. When a company documents context windows down to the token, as Moescape does, and still says nothing about voice, the silence is at least worth noticing.

The most useful thing in the SpicyChat documentation is not the feature itself but the numbers attached to it. Custom voice uploads are capped at MP3 or WAV files of 5 to 30 seconds, up to 3 clips, under 4 MB combined, with a ceiling of 20 saved voices per account. Almost nobody in this category publishes constraints that specific, and specific constraints are what let you tell whether a feature will do what you need before you pay.

Is there a free AI voice chat?

Yes. Character Calls is free on Character.AI, on both the app and the web, and its own announcement says exactly that. There is no trial window and no credit card step described. For a large number of people that is simply the right answer, and if cost is your deciding factor you should stop reading here and go use it.

The catch is not hidden, it is just easy to miss until you hit it. Free voice on a filtered platform is still filtered voice. You will reach the same refusals speaking that you reach typing, and on Character.AI those refusals cover explicit content for every account, including ones that have passed age assurance. Paying does not remove them there, because they are policy rather than a plan limit.

We have no free plan at all. Depravity starts at $15 a month for text, and voice starts at $29. That is a worse deal than free if the filter was never your problem. It is a better deal if the filter is the entire reason you are looking.

Can AI voice chat be uncensored?

Some of it, and the split is not random. Voice tends to be governed more tightly than text across this whole market, and the reason is structural rather than moral: the companies that supply speech synthesis have their own content rules, and the app stores and payment processors that sit underneath a consumer app have theirs. A chat product can be permissive in text and still find that its voice vendor is not.

Chub AI states in its own documentation that it is "uncensored" and does "not restrict in any meaningful capacity the variety of characters that are allowed to be posted", yet its docs describe no voice feature. Character.AI ships the most capable free voice product in the category and prohibits explicit content outright. That pairing shows up too often to be coincidence.

Depravity allows candid adult conversation for verified US adults in voice on the same terms as in text, and the limits do not tighten when you switch modes. The hard lines are narrow, published and unchanging: nothing involving minors, nothing involving non-consent, nothing illegal. Those apply everywhere on the service and they are not negotiable at any price.

How much does AI voice chat cost?

It ranges from nothing to the top of a subscription ladder, and the price tracks how much the platform lets you say. Character Calls is free. SpicyChat puts text-to-speech and voice cloning on its highest tier, which its documentation calls "I'm All In". Depravity puts voice notes on the $29 Unfiltered plan and live calls on the $59 Boundless plan, with yearly billing at $24 and $49 a month respectively.

One thing worth checking on any of these before you subscribe is where you are actually paying. Where a service bills through an app store rather than its own site, that billing relationship can end without warning when the app does. SpicyChat is the clearest documented case: after Apple removed its iOS app, its own notice states that subscriptions bought there "will no longer automatically renew" and that users had to re-subscribe on the web.

We bill directly and only on the web, which is less convenient than an app store purchase and also less fragile. Nothing about your plan depends on a third party continuing to list us.

Is AI voice chat private?

Treat a spoken conversation exactly as you would a typed one, because on most platforms it is stored the same way. Voice adds one risk that text does not have, which is that a cloned voice can be attached to something other people use. SpicyChat documents this plainly and to its credit warns about it: if you attach a custom voice to a public character, "anyone using it will hear your Custom Voice when they use Text-to-Speech".

Our own position, stated exactly as our privacy policy states it: conversations are never sold and never shared, they are never used to train advertising, they are encrypted, and you can export or delete them. We also disclose openly that automated systems and, where necessary, human reviewers check content to enforce the published hard lines. We do not claim we never train on chats, because that is not a promise our policy makes and we are not going to invent one.

There is no public catalogue on Depravity, no remix button and no listing your companion appears in. A voice you set here is not something a stranger can pick up along with a shared character, because there is nothing to share.

What AI voice chat still cannot do

It does not sound like a person for long. Prosody drifts on longer replies, emotional emphasis lands in the wrong place, and both playback and call systems still stumble over names, numbers and anything ambiguous in spelling. Latency on a two-way call is much better than it was, and it is still enough to change the rhythm of a real conversation.

It also does not fix memory. Speaking to a companion that forgets what you said forty minutes ago is the same problem it was in text, just less convenient to scroll back through. That is worth checking separately from voice, and most platforms publish nothing about it. If long continuity matters to you more than speaking out loud, an AI chat with long-term memory is the feature to compare first.

Finally, no product in this category should be treated as a substitute for professional help, medical advice, or a person who can actually be there. It is good at thinking out loud with you. That is a real thing, and it is not the same thing.

Questions about your ai voice chat

It depends which constraint binds first. For free two-way calling with no payment step, Character.AI, which has offered Character Calls free since June 2024 but prohibits explicit content for every user. For voice cloning with published limits, SpicyChat, on its top tier. For uncensored voice with a companion nobody else can see, Depravity, with voice notes from $29 a month for US adults 18 and over.
Yes. Character.AI states that Character Calls is "available to the general public on our app or web completely free of charge", in English and several other languages. The trade is content policy rather than price: explicit material is prohibited platform wide, including for accounts that have passed age assurance.
Depravity allows candid adult voice conversation for verified US adults on the same terms as its text chat, within firm lines on minors, non-consent and anything illegal. Most of the openly permissive text platforms, including Chub AI, document no voice feature at all, which is a pattern rather than an accident.
Text-to-speech is playback. You still type your message, the model writes a reply, and a voice engine reads it aloud afterwards. A voice call is two-way: you speak, it listens, and it answers in near real time, and you can usually interrupt it. SpicyChat documents playback only. Character.AI documents two-way calling.
Anywhere from nothing to the top of a subscription ladder. Character Calls is free. SpicyChat restricts text-to-speech to its highest tier. Depravity charges $29 a month for voice notes and $59 for live voice calls, or $24 and $49 a month billed yearly. There is no free plan here.
On SpicyChat, yes, within documented limits: MP3 or WAV clips of 5 to 30 seconds, up to 3 clips, under 4 MB combined, and no more than 20 saved voices per account. Its docs also warn that if you attach that voice to a public character, anyone chatting with it will hear your cloned voice.
That depends entirely on the platform, and most publish less than you would like. Our conversations are never sold, never shared and never used to train advertising, they are encrypted, and you can export or delete them. We also disclose that automated and human review happens, but only to enforce the published limits.
Through the browser, yes. Whether a native app exists varies and can change without warning. Apple removed the SpicyChat iOS app after determining it did not comply with its guidelines, and access to the installed app ended on September 25, 2025. Depravity runs on the web, so nothing about your access depends on an app store listing.
