Chai NSFW Rules and the Chai NSFW Filter, Quoted From Chai Itself
If you searched for Chai NSFW, you probably already know the app will sometimes go further than Character.AI and sometimes stop dead with a refusal. That inconsistency is not in your head. It is written into Chai's own documents, which do not agree with each other about what an adult may write.

Short answer
Chai does not give one answer. Its app EULA (July 28, 2026) bans sexually explicit images and video of any kind and explicit text only when it involves minors or real people, and says adults "may encounter or generate adult-oriented content". Its Safety Center says Chai's models are designed to refuse "sexually explicit content". Its web FAQ has a heading that asks "Does Chai Allow NSFW?" and never answers it. In practice, adult text roleplay sometimes goes through and sometimes gets refused, explicit images are banned outright, conversations are used to fine-tune Chai's models, and data can be kept up to five years after you delete the account.
On October 12, 2026 we read Chai's app EULA (last updated July 28, 2026), its Safety Center, its privacy policy (last updated July 2, 2026), the FAQ and terms of its separate web product, and its US App Store and Google Play listings. Below is what each one says about adult content, the filter, the age rule and the ban risk, with the exact wording, and what to use instead if you want those rules in one consistent sentence.
What makes it feel honest
Chai NSFW, the way it should feel
One rule, written once
Explicit chat between consenting adults is allowed on every plan, and the same sentence appears in our terms, our FAQ and on this page. No document says one thing while the model does another.
Your chats are not sold or shared
We never sell or share your conversations and never use them to train advertising. You can export or delete them from your account at any time.
Hard lines in writing
Adults 18 and over only. Nothing involving minors, nothing involving non-consent, nothing illegal, and nothing about real, identifiable people.

What each Chai document says, read on October 12, 2026
| Question | What Chai says | Where it says it |
|---|---|---|
| Is sexual text between adults allowed? | Not banned. Adults "may encounter or generate adult-oriented content", which must stay "strictly fictional" | App EULA section 8, last updated July 28, 2026 |
| Will the AI write it? | The models are "designed to refuse the generation of restricted material, including sexually explicit content" | Safety Center, no date shown |
| Are explicit images allowed? | No. Sexually explicit images or videos "of any kind" are "strictly prohibited" | App EULA section 7.1 |
| Is there an NSFW filter? | Optional "safety filters" hide mature content in search and explicit messages. The word NSFW is not used | Safety Center and company facts page |
| Does Chai allow NSFW? | The heading asks the question. The answer says some content "may contain mature themes" and never says yes or no | chai-ai.com FAQ, web product |
| Minimum age | 18 and over. The Safety Center says both stores rate the app 18+ | App EULA section 8 and Safety Center |
| Store age rating in the US | App Store page 18+. Google Play shows Mature 17+ | Both US listings, October 12, 2026 |
| What happens if you break the rules | "Immediate account termination", data preservation and possible reports to law enforcement for the banned categories | App EULA section 7 |
| Are chats used to train the AI? | Yes, after personal identifiers are removed. No opt-out offered | Privacy policy, last updated July 2, 2026 |
| Depravity, for comparison | Explicit chat between consenting adults allowed on every plan. No images. Chats never sold or shared | Our terms, FAQ and pricing page |

Does Chai allow NSFW?
Partly, and it depends which Chai page you believe. The app EULA does not ban sexual text between consenting adults about fictional characters. It bans three things outright: sexually explicit images or video of any kind, any sexual depiction of minors, and explicit images or "detailed text depicting real, identifiable individuals" without their consent. Everything else adult falls under section 8, which says the models "allow for expansive, user-driven roleplay" and that you "may encounter or generate adult-oriented content, including mature themes and fictionalized violence."
The Safety Center, written for parents, press and regulators, reads differently. It says Chai's "models and real-time safety systems are designed to refuse the generation of restricted material, including sexually explicit content, self-harm content, and any content that sexualises minors." That sentence puts sexually explicit content on the refused list without limiting it to images, minors or real people. So the contract allows more than the model is designed to produce, and the result is the experience most Chai users describe: a scene goes through one night and gets refused the next.
What the Chai EULA says about adult content
Section 7 is the strict part. It lists the categories Chai "strictly prohibits" and warns that breaking them "will result in immediate account termination, data preservation, and potential reporting to relevant law enforcement authorities." Section 7.1 is the one that matters most for NSFW users: "The generation, sharing, or distribution of sexually explicit images or videos of any kind on the Chai AI platform is strictly prohibited." Images are banned whatever the subject. Text is banned only when it involves minors (7.2) or real people (7.5).
Section 8 is the permissive part. Chai calls itself "a platform strictly restricted to users aged 18 and older" and asks you to agree that "all adult-oriented content generated must remain strictly fictional and must never cross the boundaries into the prohibited categories." Read together, the two sections describe a service where adult fiction in text is allowed by contract. The EULA never uses the words NSFW or sexting, and it says nothing about a filter.
If what you actually want is one consistent rule, our Chai AI alternative page compares the options side by side.
How the Chai NSFW filter works
Chai describes two layers. The first is optional and yours to switch on: "You can enable safety filters in the app to filter out mature content in search, hide explicit messages and block specific characters." Chai's own pages never call this an NSFW toggle. The only first-hand confirmation of an on and off switch we found came from Australia's eSafety Commissioner, whose March 2026 findings report says "Chai and Chub gave users the option to turn NSFW on and off."
The second layer is not optional. The Safety Center says "every user message is scanned in real time for self-harm content" and that the system then "either refuses to generate a response or replaces it with a safer alternative." The web product's FAQ adds "automated filters and manual review processes" and says content that breaks its policies "is removed." Chai publishes no list of the words or scenes that trigger a refusal, which is why the same prompt can behave differently from one session to the next.
Is Chai 18+?
By its rules, yes. The EULA restricts the app to users 18 and older, and the Safety Center says "CHAI is an 18+ service and is not intended for use by minors." The Safety Center also states that the app "is rated 18+ on the Apple App Store and Google Play."
The stores do not fully agree. On October 12, 2026 the US App Store page showed Age Rating 18+, with frequent mature or suggestive themes and infrequent sexual content or nudity. The US Google Play listing showed Mature 17+. Age is confirmed by the store, not by Chai, and only "in regions where app stores verify age". In the eSafety review, Chai was recorded as having taken "no action in response to users who were under the minimum age." If keeping minors out of an adult space matters to you, that is worth weighing.
Can you get banned on Chai for NSFW?
For the banned categories, yes, and fast. Explicit images or video, anything sexual involving minors, and explicit material about real people all lead to "immediate account termination" under section 7, with your data preserved and a possible report to law enforcement. Users can report a chat through "the in-app reporting tool" or the Online Safety Center, and reports "are evaluated strictly against these Terms of Service by our Trust and Safety team."
Fictional adult text inside the EULA's limits is not a listed ban reason, and we found no Chai document saying an account will be closed for it. The softer risk is section 16: your license "will terminate automatically and without notice" if you break any term. A paid subscription does not change the rules, and the EULA has no refund clause beyond the store's standard warranty, so a closed account is usually a lost subscription.
Who can read your Chai chats?
Chai uses them. Its privacy policy says: "We use personal data derived from your in-app conversations with chatbots to enhance and fine tune the artificial intelligence models on which these chatbots operate," after removing personal identifiers. There is no training opt-out in the policy, only the general right to object. Data is kept for up to "the duration of the account and five (5) years following its deletion."
Two smaller lines are worth knowing before you write anything personal. If you installed the app from an ad, Chai "may also share certain information, such as your usage patterns, with our advertising partners." And the web product at chai-ai.com is a separate service with its own privacy policy, which says your messages "may also be used to optimise the chatbot experience for all users."
We checked whether Chai trains on conversations in more detail in does Chai AI train on your chats, and held other apps to the same test in which AI chatbots do not train on your data.
How much Chai costs for unlimited chat
On the US App Store, Chai Premium is $13.99 a month or $134.99 a year, Ultra is $29.99 a month, and an Ultra weekly plan costs $19.99 a week, which is $1,039.48 if you keep it for a year. The same list carries a second Premium item at $9.99 and packs of Pieces from $2.79. The web product is billed separately: Pro at $159.99 a year or $9.99 a week, with a 24-hour free trial. Chai's FAQ says the app and the web are "separate platforms with no data sharing between the two", so one plan does not cover the other.
None of those plans change the content rules. Chai publishes no plan that unlocks adult content, and the Safety Center's refusal language applies to every tier. Depravity is $15 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly, and explicit chat between consenting adults is allowed on that plan and every other.
Every Chai price, who bills it and what it costs over a year is on our Chai AI subscription page. Ours are on the pricing page.
What Chai does better than we do
Scale and price of entry. Chai has a huge library of community-made characters, more than 10 million Google Play installs, a free tier and a web trial, and it ships app updates almost every week. If you want to browse thousands of bots for free and do not mind refusals now and then, Chai is a reasonable choice.
What we do instead is narrow on purpose: one private, uncensored AI companion chat for adults, with the adult rule written once, the same on every plan, and conversations that never become training data. We do not generate images at all, so there is no image rule to trip over.
Which option fits you
Pick by what you are actually trying to do, not by which list ranks first.
- You want free, varied bots and can live with refusals. Stay on Chai and switch its safety filters off in settings.
- You want a huge library of community characters with adult roleplay permitted in writing. Look at Janitor AI or SpicyChat.
- You want explicit images. Chai bans them outright, and so do we. You need an image product, and that is a different purchase.
- You want one private companion for adult conversation, with one written rule, no weekly plans and no selling or sharing of your chats. That is what Depravity is built for.
